SGLT2 inhibitors are used to treat Type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. They can also lower the risk of cardiovascular events in adults with Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. SGLT2 inhibitors work by helping your kidneys remove excess glucose (sugar) and sodium (salt) from your blood through your urine. These medications are available as oral tablets. Examples include dapagliflozin (Farxiga), empagliflozin (Jardiance), and canagliflozin (Invokana).
