What Is Stroke Risk Reduction?

Comprehensive information for you or a loved one — including treatment options and discounts on popular medications.

Stroke risk reduction involves awareness and prevention of strokes before they happen. A stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is cut off, either due a blockage or hemorrhage, and can cause brain damage or death. Previous stroke events, high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, and diabetes are all risk factors. Aspirin and anticoagulant drugs can help reduce risk.

Emergency medical treatment is needed for a stroke as soon as possible. If you believe you or someone else may be experiencing a stroke, call 911 immediately. Some drug treatments for stroke prevention include anticoagulants (Pradaxa, Eliquis), antiplatelet / NSAID combinations (Aggrenox), and antiplatelet drugs (Plavix).
