Jardiance (empagliflozin) is a sodium-glucose transport protein 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It’s best known for lowering blood sugar (glucose) in adults and children ages 10 and older living with Type 2 diabetes. And it can lower the risk of death from heart-related problems if you also have heart disease.

Jardiance is also FDA approved to treat the two most common types of heart failure in adults with and without diabetes. And it’s approved to lower the risk of worsening kidney problems, hospitalization, and death due to heart problems in adults living with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

What’s the typical Jardiance dosage for adults?

The starting Jardiance dosage is 10 mg once daily in the morning, with or without food. This is the case no matter why you’re taking Jardiance. But if you need more help lowering your blood sugar levels, your prescriber may increase your dosage to 25 mg once daily. If you’re taking Jardiance for cardiovascular risk reduction, heart failure, or CKD, the maximum dosage is 10 mg once daily.

Jardiance also comes in a combination pill with metformin called Synjardy (empagliflozin / metformin). There are several different dosage options available. People typically take Synjardy once or twice daily. Combination medications can be convenient and may lower the number of pills you take each day.

Keep in mind that you should only take Synjardy if you have Type 2 diabetes. Jardiance can be prescribed to manage heart failure or kidney disease in people with or without diabetes.

What’s the typical Jardiance dosage for children?

The starting Jardiance dosage for children ages 10 and older is 10 mg by mouth once daily in the morning, with or without food. If this dose isn’t working well enough to lower your child’s blood sugar levels, their prescriber may raise the dosage to 25 mg once daily.

Jardiance is only approved to manage Type 2 diabetes in children. It’s not approved for other uses, such as heart failure or CKD.

When should you take Jardiance?

The best time to take Jardiance is in the morning, about the same time each day. Because Jardiance gets rid of extra sugar through your kidneys, it can make you urinate more. Taking Jardiance in the morning helps prevent you from having to get up in the middle of the night to pee.

Are there any dosage adjustments for medical conditions?

There aren’t any recommended dosage adjustments for Jardiance if you have certain medical conditions. But there are situations where Jardiance may not work as well, or you may have a higher risk of side effects.

For example, Jardiance works by causing your kidneys to get rid of extra sugar through your urine. But if your kidneys aren’t working as expected, Jardiance may not lower your blood sugar as well. Because of this, Jardiance isn’t recommended if you have severe CKD and you’re taking it solely to manage diabetes.

But if you’re taking Jardiance for heart protection, heart failure, or CKD, it’s recommended to keep taking it even if your kidney function starts to go down. Studies show that Jardiance has health benefits for these uses regardless of your kidney function.

Your healthcare team should monitor your kidney function before and during treatment to ensure Jardiance is safe for you to take.

What happens if you miss a dose of Jardiance?

If you forget to take a dose of Jardiance, take it as soon as you remember. But if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and get back on schedule with your next dose. You shouldn’t take two doses of Jardiance at the same time.

If you find yourself missing medication doses often, consider downloading a smartphone reminder app, such as GoodRx’s Medicine Cabinet, to help keep you on track. Taking your medication as prescribed is important to stay on top of chronic conditions. Your pharmacist is a valuable resource if you need more tips on taking medications as prescribed.

What should you do if you take too much Jardiance?

Because Jardiance works to lower your blood sugar, there’s a risk of low blood sugar if you take too much. If you feel shaky, weak, or hungry, check your blood sugar right away. If it’s less than 70 mg/dL, follow the directions given to you for treating low blood sugar events.

Too much Jardiance could also lead to serious side effects, such as dehydration. If you become dehydrated, you may feel dizzy, light-headed, or extremely thirsty.

If you think you’ve taken too much Jardiance, contact your prescriber or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If any side effects feel severe or life-threatening, call 911 or go to your nearest ER.
