Jardiance (empagliflozin) is a brand-name medication that's used along with a nutritious diet and routine exercise to improve blood sugar levels in people 10 years and older with Type 2 diabetes. It can also lower the chance of serious complications, hospitalization, and death in certain adults with heart failure or chronic kidney disease (CKD). Jardiance (empagliflozin) belongs to the drug class called sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. It's a tablet that's taken by mouth once a day. Side effects can include urinary tract infections (UTIs), yeast infections, and weight loss.
Jardiance (empagliflozin) is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It blocks the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys. This prevents sugar and sodium (salt) from absorbing back into your body in the kidneys.
The following side effects may get better over time as your body gets used to the medication. Let your healthcare provider know immediately if you continue to experience these symptoms or if they worsen over time.
Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:
Jardiance (empagliflozin) can cause some serious health issues. This risk may be even higher for certain groups. If this worries you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other options.
Some people with diabetes who take Jardiance (empagliflozin) can develop a serious, life-threatening condition called ketoacidosis. This condition happens when your body makes too many acids called ketones, which makes your blood acidic. This can be dangerous. You're at risk for ketoacidosis if you get sick, eat less calories than usual, or just had surgery.
Whether you have diabetes or not, be aware of the signs and symptoms of ketoacidosis while you're taking Jardiance (empagliflozin). Early signs can include feeling thirstier, having dry mouth, and urinating more often. If you also have fruity breath, stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting or if you feel very tired, check your ketone levels and get medical help right away.
Jardiance (empagliflozin) can cause the amount of fluids in the body to drop. As a result, some people might get dehydrated, and others might have very low blood pressure. Low fluid levels in the body can also affect blood flow to the kidneys and cause kidney injury.
You're more likely at risk for having low fluid levels in the body and related complications if you're 65 years or older, you already have kidney problems, or if you're following a low-sodium diet. To make sure Jardiance (empagliflozin) is safe for you to take, your prescriber will check your kidney health through blood tests before you start treatment. They also might continue to periodically check your kidney health while you're taking the medication.
Talk to your care team if you feel dizzy or lightheaded you're taking Jardiance (empagliflozin). These can be signs of dehydration or low blood pressure. Also contact your prescriber if you're urinating less than usual because that could mean that you're dehydrated. It could also be a sign of a kidney problem.
Jardiance (empagliflozin) raises the risk of genital infections, like yeast infections and UTIs. Although rare, some of these infections can become serious and require hospitalization. Contact a healthcare professional right away if you have a burning feeling when urinating; a need to urinate often; blood in your urine; an odor from your genitals; or pain, itching, swelling, redness, or tenderness around your genitals. You might need to be prescribed treatment for a genital yeast infection or for a UTI.
Taking Jardiance (empagliflozin) together with certain other diabetes medications, such as insulin and sulfonylureas like glipizide, can put you at risk for low blood sugar. Very low blood sugar can be life-threatening.
It's important that you can recognize symptoms of low blood sugar, including feeling shaky, anxious, confused, sleepy, weak, or very hungry. You might also have a fast heartbeat or body chills. Check your blood sugar if you have these symptoms and treat any low blood sugar right away. Talk to your prescriber or pharmacist about your risk for low blood sugar.
Although rare, some people who took Jardiance (empagliflozin) during clinical studies needed foot or leg amputations. The risk for this complication appears higher for people who've previously had amputation or have blood circulation problems. In studies, the most common reasons for amputations for people who took this medication were peripheral artery disease and diabetic foot ulcers.
Let a healthcare professional know right away if you have any new pain, tenderness, sores, ulcers, or infections on your legs or feet. Your care team can recommend ways to manage these foot problems or treat them before they get worse. If you have diabetes, regularly visit your diabetes care team for foot exams.
In rare cases, Jardiance (empagliflozin) can cause serious allergic reactions. Get medical help right away if you have trouble breathing; rash; or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
The typical dose is 10 mg by mouth once daily in the morning.
For people with Type 2 diabetes only, your prescriber might raise your dose to 25 mg once daily if you need more help with controlling your blood sugar levels.
