Medications for osteoporosis are used to strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures. They work by either slowing down bone loss or increasing bone formation. Common classes include bisphosphonates, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), and RANK ligand (RANKL) inhibitor. Bisphosphonates like alendronate (Fosamax) and ibandronate are usually taken as oral pills but can also be given as injections. SERMs, such as raloxifene (Evista), are typically taken as oral pills. RANKL inhibitor, such as Prolia (denosumab) come as an injection. These medications offer different ways to help maintain your bone health.
