Simvastatin (Zocor) is a statin used to lower your cholesterol to help protect your heart and blood vessels from serious, and even life-threatening, medical problems, such as heart attack or stroke. Simvastatin (Zocor) isn't meant to lower cholesterol on its own. Instead, you should take it in addition to eating a healthy diet and having a regular exercise routine. To get the most out of the medication, it's best to take simvastatin (Zocor) nightly before going to sleep.
Prevention of heart or blood vessel problems (e.g., heart attack or stroke) in people at higher-risk for heart problems
Lower high "bad" cholesterol and triglyceride levels in certain people
Simvastatin (Zocor) is a statin. The main way it works is by blocking an enzyme (protein) in your liver that makes cholesterol. As a result, simvastatin (Zocor) lowers your "bad" cholesterol (called low-density lipoprotein, or LDL). Simvastatin (Zocor) can also raise your "good" cholesterol (called high-density lipoprotein, or HDL) levels and lower your triglyceride levels.

Can help lower the risk of heart attack and stroke
Oral solution (Flolipid) available for people who have trouble swallowing tablets
Can be used in children as young as 10 years old
Can't take if you've certain liver problems

Simvastatin (Zocor) has the highest risk among the statins to cause rhabdomyolysis, a life-threatening muscle problem
You can take simvastatin (Zocor) with or without food. But make sure to take the tablets whole.
Take your dose at night before going to sleep. This will help you get the most benefit from the medication. If it's challenging for you to take this medication at bedtime, ask your provider about taking it at a time that works best for you.
Limit the amount of alcohol you drink while taking simvastatin (Zocor). This is because alcohol can raise your risk of serious liver problems with simvastatin (Zocor). Ask your provider what's a safe amount of alcohol to drink while you're taking this medication.
Let your provider know right away if you experience muscle pain or weakness, especially if you also have fever or feel extremely tired. This can be a sign of a rare, but serious, breakdown of muscles called rhabdomyolysis.
Simvastatin (Zocor) interacts with many commonly prescribed medications. For example, amiodarone (Pacerone), amlodipine (Norvasc), and colchicine (Colcrys) can raise the level of simvastatin (Zocor) in your body and put you at higher risk for side effects, such as muscle damage. Make sure to let your provider know about all the medications you're taking (including vitamins and supplements) before starting simvastatin (Zocor).
Avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking simvastatin (Zocor) because it can raise the amount of the medication in your body, which raises your risk of side effects.
It's important that you eat a healthy and balanced diet low in fat and a maintain a regular exercise routine while taking simvastatin (Zocor). Doing so will help you get the most benefit out of the medication. Talk with your provider if you have questions about how to plan your meals and what kind of exercise is appropriate for you.
Make sure to mark your calendar with your appointments to see your provider and to get any blood work done when you take simvastatin (Zocor). Your provider will order blood work to check your cholesterol levels during treatment. They might change your dose of simvastatin (Zocor) based on your lab results.
Tips for Flolipid oral solution
If you're taking Flolipid (simvastatin) oral solution, you need to take it on an empty stomach.
Make sure to shake the bottle of Flolipid (simvastatin) for at least 20 seconds before using it. You need to measure your dose with a medication measuring device. Don't use household spoons to measure your dose because it might not be accurate.
Please properly dispose your bottle of Flolipid (simvastatin) 30 days after you open it, even if there's still medication left. The remaining medication might not work well if you continue to use it after 30 days.
Simvastatin (Zocor) can cause some serious health issues. This risk may be even higher for certain groups. If this worries you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other options.
Risk factors: Age 65 years and older | Higher dose of simvastatin (Zocor) | Kidney problems | Taking other medications that can also cause muscle problems or interact with simvastatin (Zocor) | Uncontrolled hypothyroidism
Simvastatin (Zocor) can cause a rare, but serious and life-threatening muscle problem called rhabdomyolysis. Your risk if higher if you take other medications that can raise the levels of simvastatin (Zocor) in your body. For this reason, don't start any new medications without asking your provider or pharmacist first. If you notice any of symptoms of rhabdomyolysis, such as severe muscle pain, dark-colored urine, weakness, and tiredness, stop simvastatin (Zocor) and get medical attention right away.
Rarely, statins can cause immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM). In these cases, the pain might continue even if you stop taking the statin. If you develop IMNM, your provider will ask you to stop the statin and might treat you with medications to dampen down your immune system.
Risk factors: History of liver problems | Drinking large amounts of alcohol
Though rare, simvastatin (Zocor) can cause serious liver problems that can lead to liver failure. You might need to get blood tests to check your liver health before and during treatment to make sure your liver is working properly. Get medical attention right away if you notice swelling of your stomach, stomach pain, yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes, stool changes (black, tarry, or bloody stools), nausea, vomiting, confusion, or dark or brown urine. You might need to stop using the medication to prevent further liver damage.
Risk factors: High blood sugar
Some research suggest that simvastatin (Zocor) can raise your blood sugars levels, which can lead to higher hemoglobin A1C levels. However, healthcare providers believe that the benefits of statins outweigh their risk for harm. Let your provider know if you have high blood sugar before starting simvastatin (Zocor) because you might need to monitor your blood sugar more often. Also, make sure to have a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise while taking simvastatin (Zocor).
Simvastatin (Zocor) isn't recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding for most people. This medication can cause harm to unborn and breastfed babies. If you're pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding, ask your provider about the safest options for you.
