Switched for my high blood pressure bc Lisinopril gave me an awful choking ACE cough& made my hands numb. I wasn't aware that norvasc is used to slow heart rate and alleviate chest pain until I read this but in just the short time I've been on it, my constant palpitations, chest pain& pressure which I've been suffering w/ for 7 months have vanished.I wish I was put on it this to begin with.I Don't Care If I Get Dizzy And Swollen it's better than feeling like I'm always dying

I wish that I would have recognized the onset of debilitating joint pain was stemming from the medication's edema side effect. The edema could first be felt in the joints and then swelling increased significantly during any physical activity. The unfamiliar joint pain decreased my ability to manage household chores. Less activity contributed to a sudden significant weight gain. Ultimately, in just the 2 months I have been on this medication, I feel and I look 10 years older!

  • Nausea3%
  • Abdominal pain2%

Serious Side Effects

  • Low blood pressure
      Higher risk if:
    • Age 65 years or older

You can experience dizziness due to a drop in blood pressure. This is a common early side effect of many medications that lower blood pressure including Norvasc (Amlodipine). Typically this will go away over time as your body gets used to the lowered blood pressure. It may be more likely to occur when you change posture, such as going from sitting to standing. If you're sensitive to low blood pressure, change position slowly. If the dizziness is unbearable then talk with your doctor. A different medication may be better for you.

  • Heart attack
      Higher risk if:
    • History of heart problems

Worsening heart pain or increased risk of heart attack is possible when you first start taking Norvasc (Amlodipine). This can also happen after you increase the dose of Norvasc (Amlodipine). Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any heart pain, radiating jaw pain, crushing chest pain, or persistent racing heartbeat.

  • Special dosing requirements
      Higher risk if:
    • Liver disease

Your body uses your liver to break down Norvasc (Amlodipine) and remove it from your blood. If you have liver disease you may not be able to remove Norvasc (Amlodipine) as quickly from your blood as someone with a healthy liver. You should increase the dose of Norvasc (Amlodipine) slowly and watch closely for how it is working in your body. Increasing the dose slowly will lower your chances of having side effects.

  • Foot and leg swelling (edema)
      Higher risk if:
    • History of blood vessel disease
    • History of heart failure
    • History of kidney disease
    • Obesity

Norvasc (Amlodipine) can cause varying degrees of swelling in your limbs. The most commonly affected areas are your feet, ankles, legs, or occasionally your arms. Swelling may be worse if you have other conditions that makes it hard for your body to get rid of fluids such as congestive heart failure or kidney disease. If your swelling is caused by Norvasc (Amlodipine), it should improve when you stop taking the medication. If the swelling is bothersome, a different medication may be better for you.
