Key takeaways:

  • If you’re taking more than one blood pressure medication, a combination pill might allow you to avoid taking two different pills.

  • Most combinations contain an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin II receptor blocker with a diuretic. Other combinations contain a beta blocker or calcium channel blocker.

  • Most blood pressure medications and combination pills are available as lower-cost generics. Check with GoodRx for ways to make your prescription more affordable.

Having to take several blood pressure medications every day can be a hassle. If you’re stable on your current medications, you may be able to combine them into one pill.

For some people, combination blood pressure medications can offer convenience and make it easier to stay on track with your treatment plan. But combination pills aren’t right for everyone. So it may be worth talking about your options with your healthcare provider.

What are the different classifications of combination blood pressure medications?

There are many different combination blood pressure medications available. They most often contain a combination of the following medication classes, which can work together in different ways to lower your blood pressure.

Medication class How they work Examples

Enalapril
Benazepril
Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB) Works on the same system as ACE inhibitors, but in a slightly different way Telmisartan
Losartan
Olmesartan
Valsartan
Candesartan
Calcium channel blockers (CCB) Helps your blood vessels relax, which can lower your blood pressure Amlodipine
Beta blockers Lowers your heart rate so your heart doesn’t have to work as hard to pump blood Atenolol
Bisoprolol
Thiazide and thiazide-like diuretics (water pills) Works in your kidneys to help get rid of extra fluids through your urine Hydrochlorothiazide
Chlorthalidone

Common examples of combination blood pressure medications include:

Who can benefit from combination blood pressure medications?

Combination blood pressure medications aren’t right for everyone. But they can be a good option for certain people. Here are a few things to consider if you’re thinking about using these medications:

  • Are your medications and doses available as a combination pill? Many popular blood pressure medications come in single-pill combinations — but not all of them. And the doses you’re taking might be different from what’s available in combination pills, too.

  • Are you stable on your current medications and doses? If you’re still figuring out the right medication and/or dose, a combination pill might not be the best choice. But if you’ve been taking the same regimen for a while, it may be an option to consider.

  • Are you having difficulty taking your pills on time? A combination pill can help reduce the number of pills you take every day. Fewer pills can help simplify your routine and make it easier to remember when to take your medication.

  • Are your medication costs adding up? Most blood pressure medications are available as lower-cost generics, but the cost of multiple prescriptions can be pricey. Sometimes, you may be able to save money with a combination blood pressure pill instead.

If you’ve been taking at least two blood pressure medications for a while, discuss your options with your healthcare provider or pharmacist. A combination blood pressure medication may be a good fit.

The bottom line

Many common blood pressure medications are available in single-pill combinations. This includes ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and diuretics. Combination blood pressure medications can help you cut down the number of pills you’re taking. And they may help you save money, too. Your healthcare provider can decide if one might be an option for you.
