Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) are used to treat and prevent HIV infection. Some also have other uses, such as treating chronic hepatitis B. NRTIs work by blocking an enzyme called reverse transcriptase, which the virus needs to make copies of itself. These medications are usually taken as oral pills. Examples include tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (Viread), lamivudine (Epivir), emtricitabine (Emtriva), and abacavir (Ziagen). Some NRTIs are combined into single pills so they're easier to take, like Descovy (emtricitabine / tenofovor alafenamide) and Truvada (emtricitabine / tenofovir disoproxil fumarate). Discuss with your HIV specialist about which medication is best for your needs.
