Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) is a combination medication used to relieve symptoms of enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). Although it works well, it can cause problems with ejaculation, erection, and your sex drive.
Symptoms caused by enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH)
Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) is a combination of two medications that work in different ways to relieve your BPH symptoms.
Dutasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It blocks 5-alpa reductase, a protein that breaks down testosterone to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the hormone responsible for enlarging your prostate. By lowering DHT levels, dutasteride stops your prostate from growing.
Tamsulosin is an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker. It blocks alpha-1 receptors in your prostate. This causes the muscles around the bladder and prostate to relax so you have less of an urge to urinate and so your urine flows better.

Combines two different medications into one in order to relieve your BPH symptoms
Taken once a day
Available in a lower-cost, generic form
Can cause a sudden drop in your blood pressure upon standing
Can cause problems with ejaculation, erection, and your sex drive
Can interact with other medications
Take Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) 30 minutes after the same meal every day. Swallow the capsule whole, don't chew, open, or crush the capsule.
Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) can cause a sudden drop in your blood pressure when you stand. This can cause dizziness, vertigo (spinning), or fainting. If you feel these symptoms, sit or lie down right away so you don't fall.
Don't use Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) if you've had a serious allergic reaction to sulfa medications, such as Bactrim or Septra (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim), sulfasalazine (Azulfidine), and sumatriptan (Imitrex). Although rare, patients with an allergy to sulfa medications can have an allergic reaction to Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin).
Women who are pregnant or are potentially pregnant should not touch this medication. Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) can be absorbed through the skin and cause damage to an unborn, male baby's genitals. If a pregnant woman accidentally touches Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin), they should wash their hands with soap and water right away.
Although it's rare, Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) can cause prolonged, painful erections (priapism) unrelated to sexual activity. If this happens, get medical care right away to avoid any permanent damage.
Store Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) at room temperature. It can get discolored or deformed if it's kept in really hot temperatures. Don't take the medication if it changes color or shape.
Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) can cause some serious health issues. This risk may be even higher for certain groups. If this worries you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other options.
Risk factors: Taking blood pressure medications | Taking medications for erectile dysfunction
Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) can cause a big drop in blood pressure when you stand up from a sitting or lying down position. This can make you feel dizzy or it can make you faint. It's more likely to happen when you take your first dose. It can also occur if your treatment gets interrupted, if your dose is raised, or if you start taking other blood pressure or erectile dysfunction medications at the same time. Be cautious with activity when you first start Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) or increase your dose.
Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) might slightly increase your risk of aggressive prostate cancer, but overall, studies showed your risk of prostate cancer is lower if you take Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin).
Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) can lower prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in your body, which can affect the results of a prostate cancer test. Your provider will likely monitor your PSA levels periodically while you take Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin).
Risk factors: Planned cataract or glaucoma surgery
Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) can cause floppy iris syndrome (FIS), which is an issue that can occur during cataract surgery. FIS can raise your risk of having eye problems during and after cataract surgery. Let your eye provider know if you're taking Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) because you might need to stop the medication or your provider might need to change their surgical technique.
Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) can interact with many medications, such as certain mental health medications, erectile dysfunction medications, and blood thinners, so it's important that you check with your provider or pharmacist to see if it's safe for you to start Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin). If Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) is taken at the same time as certain medications, it can raise your risk of side effects.
Although it's rare, Jalyn (dutasteride / tamsulosin) can cause prolonged, unwanted penile erection lasting longer than 4 hours. This can have permanent effects. Get medical care right away if this occurs.
