Olanzapine (Zyprexa) and Chlorpromazine (Thorazine) are both antipsychotic medications, but they belong to different classes. Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic, while Chlorpromazine is a first-generation (typical) antipsychotic. Olanzapine is used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and certain types of depression when combined with fluoxetine (Prozac). Common side effects of Olanzapine include sleepiness, dizziness, and weight gain, while Chlorpromazine can cause drowsiness, uncontrollable muscle movements, and dry mouth. Both medications carry a higher risk of death in older adults with dementia-related psychosis and can cause serious conditions like neuroleptic malignant syndrome. However, Olanzapine is more likely to cause metabolic issues like high blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
