Quetiapine (Seroquel) and divalproex (Depakote) are both prescription medications, but they belong to different classes and have some different uses. Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. It works by balancing chemicals in the brain like dopamine and serotonin. Divalproex, on the other hand, is an antiepileptic used to treat seizures, bipolar disorder, and to prevent migraines. It helps control seizures by increasing a brain chemical called GABA. Quetiapine is available in both immediate-release and extended-release forms, while divalproex comes in delayed-release and extended-release tablets, as well as sprinkle capsules. Quetiapine can cause sleepiness, dry mouth, and dizziness, whereas divalproex can cause nausea, sleepiness, and headache. Divalproex should not be taken during pregnancy due to the risk of serious birth defects. While quetiapine doesn’t raise the risk for miscarriage or birth defects, it may cause pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes in pregnant mothers. Additionally, both medications are available as low-cost generics.
