Compare Maprotiline vs. Vivactil

Maprotiline (Ludiomil) and Vivactil (protriptyline) are both antidepressants, but they belong to different classes. Maprotiline is a tetracyclic antidepressant, while Vivactil is a tricyclic antidepressant. Maprotiline was used to treat depression as well as anxiety associated with depression, but it was discontinued in 2021 and is no longer available in the United States. Maprotiline was likely discontinued due to the availability of newer antidepressants with fewer side effects. On the other hand, Vivactil is still available but is not commonly used today because it needs to be taken 3 to 4 times per day. It works by increasing norephinephrine and serotonin levels in the brain. Vivactil can cause many side effects, such as headache, blurry vision, and restlessness. Additionallly, Vivactil can cause withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly and has a higher risk of side effects like suicidal thoughts, heart problems, and seizures.
