Atovaquone / Proguanil Side Effects
What should I watch for?
This medicine can make you more sensitive to the sun. Keep out of the sun. If you cannot avoid being in the sun, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen. Do not use sun lamps or tanning beds/booths.
While in areas where malaria is common, take steps to prevent mosquito bites.
- Stay in air-conditioned or well-screened rooms to reduce human-mosquito contact.
- Sleep under mosquito netting, preferably one with pyrethrum-containing insecticide.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts or blouses and long trousers to protect arms and legs.
- Apply mosquito repellents containing DEET to uncovered areas of skin.
- Use a pyrethrum-containing flying insect spray to kill mosquitoes.
Common and Rare Side Effects
Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:
Incidence not known
Blistering, peeling, loosening of skin
hives or welts
increased sensitivity of skin to sunlight
itching, redness or other discoloration of skin
joint or muscle pain
large, hive-like swelling on face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, sex organs
loss of bladder control
muscle spasm or jerking of all extremities
puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
red, irritated eyes
red skin lesions, often with a purple center
seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there
severe mental changes
shortness of breath
sores, ulcers or white spots in mouth or on lips
sudden loss of consciousness
tightness in chest
unusual tiredness or weakness
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:
lack of or loss of strength
sores in mouth
Acid or sour stomach
blurred or loss of vision
disturbed color perception
flu like symptoms
halos around lights
loss of appetite
overbright appearance of lights
stomach discomfort, upset or pain
unable to sleep
feeling sad or empty
lack of appetite
loss of interest or pleasure
