  • Didn’t work

I really wanted this to work for me but I guess given my GAD my doctor should have known this was not going to work. I only took it for 3 days because I truly couldn’t function with the amount of anxiety this drug gave me.

If you also have anxiety problems, then a higher dose (300mg+) is great. At lower doses, it makes anxiety much worse, so ramp up quickly.

Serious Side Effects

  • Suicidal thoughts or behavior
      Higher risk if:
    • Age 24 years or younger

Wellbutrin (Bupropion) may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior. Watch for worsening depression or any unusual changes in mood or behavior, especially during the first few months of treatment or when the dose changes. Report anything concerning to a doctor immediately. Wellbutrin (Bupropion) is not approved for use in children younger than age 18.

This is a black box warning. The FDA requires this warning when there is a significant risk of serious or life-threatening effects that anyone taking the drug should consider.
  • Psychiatric effects for smoking cessation
      Higher risk if:
    • History of depression
    • History of bipolar disorder
    • At risk for bipolar disorder
    • Withdrawing from nicotine

Wellbutrin is not approved for smoking cessation, but bupropion under the name Zyban is approved for this use. Some people taking it for smoking cessation have reported serious psychiatric effects, such as depression and, rarely, suicidal thoughts or behavior. These effects may be worse if you're withdrawing from nicotine because depression can be symptom of nicotine withdrawal. Watch for any sudden changes in mood, thinking, or behavior, and report anything concerning to a doctor immediately.

  • Seizures
      Higher risk if:
    • History of seizures
    • Alcoholism
    • Eating disorder
    • Higher dose

  • Mania
      Higher risk if:
    • History of bipolar disorder
    • At risk for bipolar disorder

Sometimes, depression is the first symptom of bipolar disorder. Treating someone with bipolar disorder with an antidepressant alone can cause a manic episode (great excitement, euphoria, delusions, and overactivity). Make sure your doctor has screened you for a personal or family history of bipolar disorder or symptoms, and a family history of suicide.

  • Increased side effects
      Higher risk if:
    • Current kidney problems
    • Current liver problems

Wellbutrin (Bupropion) is processed by the kidney and liver. If you have kidney or liver problems, you may need a different dose to prevent increased risk for side effects.

  • Weight loss

Wellbutrin (Bupropion) may cause weight loss. Talk to your doctor if weight loss is not desirable.
