What is Bupropion?

Reduces nicotine cravings. Good for blocking the withdrawal symptoms of quitting smoking. But you need to be okay with avoiding alcohol use and possibly using nicotine replacement.

Bupropion Quick Facts

Proper Use

Take this medicine only as directed by your doctor. Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, and do not use it for a longer time than your doctor ordered. To do so may increase the chance of side effects.

This medicine should come with a Medication Guide. Read and follow these instructions carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions.

Use only the brand of this medicine that your doctor prescribed. Different brands may not work the same way.

Swallow the tablet whole. Do not break, crush, or chew it.

You may take this medicine with or without food. But if you have nausea, take the medicine with food.

A part of the extended-release tablet may pass into your stool. This is normal and is nothing to worry about.

Use of Zyban® tablets:

  • You may continue to smoke for about 1 week after you start the medicine.
  • Set a target date to quit smoking during your second week of treatment.
  • If you are still having trouble with quitting after using the medicine for at least 7 weeks, talk to your doctor.
  • If you use a nicotine product (eg, patch) together with Zyban®, do not smoke. Smoking may increase the chance for serious side effects.

If you have trouble sleeping (insomnia), do not take this medicine too close to bedtime.

If you use this medicine to prevent depression with seasonal affective disorder, take it during the autumn season before your symptoms start. Continue using the medicine through the winter season and until early spring.

Serious Side Effects

  • Psychiatric effects for quitting smoking
      Higher risk if:
    • History of depression
    • History of bipolar disorder
    • At risk for bipolar disorder
    • Withdrawing from nicotine

Some people taking Zyban (Bupropion) for smoking cessation have reported serious psychiatric effects, such as depression and, rarely, suicidal thoughts or behavior. These effects may be worse if you're withdrawing from nicotine because depression can be symptom of nicotine withdrawal. Watch for any sudden changes in mood, thinking, or behavior, and report anything concerning to a doctor immediately.

  • Suicidal thoughts or behavior
      Higher risk if:
    • Age 24 and younger

Zyban (Bupropion) may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior. Watch for depression or any unusual changes in mood or behavior, especially during the first few months of treatment or when the dose changes. Report anything concerning to a doctor immediately. It is not known if Zyban (Bupropion) safe children younger than age 18.

  • Seizures
      Higher risk if:
    • Those taking large doses

Zyban (Bupropion) can lower the brain's threshold for seizures in people with certain risk factors. Use with caution.

  • Hypertension
      Higher risk if:
    • Those taking MAOIs or using a nicotine patch

Zyban (Bupropion) can cause your blood pressure to go up. Patients taking MAOIs or using the nicotine patch should monitor their blood pressure.

  • Angle-closure Glaucoma

Zyban (Bupropion) may cause sudden nearsightedness or angle-closure glaucoma, especially if you have an allergy to penicillin or antibiotics with sulfonamides. This can lead to permanent blindness if not treated away. Tell your prescriber if you have these allergies, or if you suddenly develop sudden eye pain or changes in vision.

  • Mania

Sometimes, depression is the first symptom of bipolar disorder. Treating someone with bipolar disorder with an antidepressant alone can cause a manic episode (great excitement, euphoria, delusions, and overactivity). Make sure your doctor has screened you for a personal or family history of bipolar disorder or symptoms, and a family history of suicide.

  • Severe allergic reactions

Zyban (Bupropion) can cause hypersensitivity reactions (severe rash, trouble breathing) and angioedema (life-threatening condition with swelling with or without hives). This is a medical emergency and you get medical attention immediately.
