Finasteride Coupon - Finasteride 5mg tablet

Generic Propecia, Proscar

Finasteride (Proscar, Propecia) is an inexpensive drug used for the treatment of hair loss and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Proscar (finasteride 5 mg) is used to treat BPH, and Propecia (finasteride 1 mg) is used for hair loss. Generic finasteride is covered by most Medicare and insurance plans for BPH, but not for hair loss, so pharmacy coupons may be lower. The lowest GoodRx price for the most common version of finasteride is around $8.57, 90% off the average retail price of $86.15. Compare 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.

Finasteride Quick Facts

Proper Use

Take this medicine only as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered.

This medicine comes with a patient information leaflet. Read and follow the instructions carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions.

You may take this medicine with or without food.

If you are taking this medicine for male pattern hair loss, it may take at least 3 months to see an effect. The medicine will not cure hair loss, but it will cause scalp hair to grow. The hair growth will only last as long as the medicine is used. The new hair will be lost within 1 year after the medicine is stopped.

If you are taking this medicine for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), it may take up to 6 months to see the full effect. The medicine will not cure BPH, but it does help reduce the size of the prostate and improve symptoms. The effect on the prostate will only last as long as the medicine is used. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again within a few months.

Take this medicine at the same time each day.

Serious Side Effects

  • Risk during pregnancy and use in children

Pregnant women or females of childbearing age should never handle crushed or broken tablets of Proscar (finasteride) because it can cause serious birth defects in the unborn baby. Proscar (finasteride) is not approved for use in children.

  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels
      Higher risk if:
    • Proscar (finasteride) use for 6 months or longer

Proscar (finasteride) has affected PSA serum levels. An increase in PSA, even if within the normal range, may signal the presence of prostate cancer. Have a rectal exam (to check prostate gland) and blood work (PSA test). Talk with your doctor.

  • Prostate cancer
      Higher risk if:
    • Men aged 55 years or older
    • Taking 5 mg/day

In a clinical study, a form of prostate cancer was seen more often in some men taking Proscar (finasteride) than in those who were not. Talk with your doctor if this is a concern.

  • Evaluation for other diseases of the male urinary tract system and the reproductive organs

Prior to starting Proscar (finasteride), evaluation of other conditions of the male urinary tract system and reproductive organs should be considered since the symptoms are similar. In addition, an enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may coexist.

  • Blood donation

Men taking Proscar (finasteride) should not donate blood until at least 1 month have passed following their last dose. This is to prevent blood transfusion of Proscar (finasteride) to a pregnant female.
