Direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are used to treat and prevent blood clots, such as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE). They're commonly prescribed after surgery or if you have a health condition that makes blood clots more likely, such as atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat). Examples of DOACs include apixaban (Eliquis), rivaroxaban (Xarelto), and dabigatran (Pradaxa).
