What Is Pulmonary Embolism?

Pulmonary embolism occurs when there is a deep vein thrombosis in which there is a blood clot. The blood clot travels up into the lungs. Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, and cough.

Treatment for pulmonary embolism includes surgery and medication. A common drug class used to treat pulmonary embolism is the anticoagulants drug class.
