Compare Humalog vs. Actos

Head-to-head comparisons of medication uses, side effects, warnings, and more.

Key takeaways

Humalog (insulin lispro) and Actos (pioglitazone) are both used to manage diabetes, but they work in different ways and are used for different types of diabetes. Humalog is a rapid-acting insulin that you inject to control blood sugar levels in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It starts working within 15 minutes and lasts for 2 to 4 hours and taken multiple times a day with meals. On the other hand, Actos is a thiazolidinedione taken as a pill once daily with or without food, to help your body use insulin better only for patients with type 2 diabetes. Actos can take several weeks to show its full effect. Humalog can cause low blood sugar and weight gain, while Actos can cause fluid buildup, weight gain, and has a risk of bladder cancer and heart failure. Actos is not recommended for people with type 1 diabetes or those with bladder cancer.
