What is Atrial Fibrillation?

Atrial fibrillation is a type of arrhythmia that causes the heart to beat quickly out of rhythm. Some people may not feel any symptoms, but chest pain, weakness, or dizziness can be common. Atrial fibrillation can cause strokes or heart failure.

Treatment for atrial fibrillation may depend on the underlying cause. Medications, including calcium channel blockers, antiarrhythmics, or digoxin can help restore normal rhythm. If the arrhythmia is cause by coronary artery disease, for example, you may also need to change your lifestyle, take medications to lower your cholesterol, or undergo surgery.
