About Mevacor
Mevacor (lovastatin) is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor or "statin." It lowers levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Statins may also reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or other health problems in patients with risk factors for heart disease. Mevacor is also available as generic lovastatin, and in combination with niacin in Advicor. Extended-release lovastatin is known as Altoprev, and is brand-name only.
