Likmez (metronidazole) is an antibiotic that's used to treat certain infections in children and adults. It's available as a liquid that you swallow, and the dose can vary depending on the type of infection you have and your body weight. This liquid formulation of metronidazole is only available as a brand-name medication. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and headache.
Likmez (metronidazole) is a nitroimidazole antibiotic. It works by affecting the DNA (genetic material) of bacteria or parasites that are causing the infection. This causes the bacteria or parasite to die so the infection stops growing.
The following side effects may get better over time as your body gets used to the medication. Let your healthcare provider know immediately if you continue to experience these symptoms or if they worsen over time.
Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report these to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):
You can take Likmez (metronidazole) with or without food. Try taking it with some food if it upsets your stomach. This can help prevent stomach upset.
It's recommended to avoid drinking alcohol while you're taking Likmez (metronidazole). It's also recommended to continue avoiding alcohol for 3 days after your last dose of Likmez (metronidazole). This is because Likmez (metronidazole) and alcohol together can cause a bad reaction. This can make you feel nauseous, have stomach pain or a headache, and experience flushing (feeling warm all of a sudden).
There isn't enough information to know whether Likmez (metronidazole) is safe to take during pregnancy. Some studies haven't found a link between taking metronidazole during pregnancy and harm to unborn babies. To be safe, discuss with your provider about the risks and benefits of taking Likmez (metronidazole) if you're pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant.
Because there haven't been enough studies done, it's not clear whether it's safe to take Likmez (metronidazole) while breastfeeding. Researchers do know that Likmez (metronidazole) can get into breast milk. To avoid potential side effects in your baby, your provider might recommend that you pump and discard your breast milk while you're taking this medication and for 48 hours after your last dose. In the meantime, you can choose to feed your baby previously-stored breast milk or formula. Talk to your provider to learn more.
No. Likmez (metronidazole) is only available with a prescription from your healthcare provider.
Likmez (metronidazole) can cause some serious health issues. This risk may be even higher for certain groups. If this worries you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other options.
Animal studies show that metronidazole might cause cancer in mice and rats. It's unclear whether this applies to humans. To be safe, your provider will make sure you take Likmez (metronidazole) when it's necessary. Don't use Likmez (metronidazole) longer than what's been prescribed by your provider.
Although rare, some people taking metronidazole can have seizures or problems with normal brain function. Cases of brain damage (encephalopathy) and aseptic meningitis (inflammation of the linings of the brain) have been reported with taking metronidazole. Symptoms might appear within hours of taking the medication. Typically, these symptoms get better once the medication is stopped, but can take days or weeks. Symptoms include not being able to walk straight, dizziness, not being able to speak, shaking, and uncontrolled movements of your body. Contact your provider or go to the emergency room right away if you experience anything like this while you're taking Likmez (metronidazole).
Some people who've taken metronidazole have had nerve damage. Symptoms include burning, tingling, numbness, pain, or not being able to tolerate heat or cold in parts of your body. Tell your provider right away if you have any of these symptoms.
In clinical studies, there were a few cases of a low white blood cell count with metronidazole use. To be safe, tell your provider if you have a history of low blood cell counts. Your provider might check your blood cell count before and after taking Likmez (metronidazole).
Taking Likmez (metronidazole) can cause new fungal infections or symptoms of a current fungal infection to worsen. Some examples of fungal infections include genital yeast infections and thrush. Let your provider know right away if you have new symptoms of a yeast infection, such as white patches in your mouth; redness or soreness; pain while eating or swallowing; thick, white discharge in your vagina; or vaginal itching.
