Amoebiasis

Comprehensive information for you or a loved one — including treatment options and discounts on popular medications.

Amoebiasis is an infection caused by a certain amoeba called Entamoeba histolytica. It is often transmitted through contaminated food or water. There may be no symptoms or the severity may range from mild diarrhea to dysentery, an inflammation of the intestine.

Treatments for amoebiasis include the use of macrolide antibiotics (Flagyl), nitroimidazole antibiotics (erythromycin), animalarials (chloroquine), and antiprotozoals (paromomycin). Awareness of food, water, and sanitation conditions can help to prevent an infection.
