What is GERD?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus. Symptoms include heartburn or a burning sensation in the chest, dry cough, sore throat, regurgitation of food, and difficulty swallowing.

Treatments for GERD include drinking plenty of water, taking over-the-counter antacids, and taking prescription medications. Common drug classes used to treat GERD are proton pump inhibitors, aluminum complexes, dopamine receptor antagonists, and histamine-2 antagonists.
