Medications for myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are used to treat MDS. These medications also have other uses, such as treating certain other types of blood cancers. They work by targeting abnormal cells in your bone marrow to kill cancer cells or to help your body make healthy blood cells. Common classes include tyrosine kinase inhibitors, immunomodulatory drugs, and hypomethylating agents. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors like imatinib (Gleevec) are usually taken as oral pills. Immunomodulatory drugs, such as lenalidomide (Revlimid), also come in oral form. Hypomethylating agents, like azacitidine (Vidaza) and decitabine (Dacogen), are available as injectable forms, while Inqovi (cedazuridine / decitabine) can be taken orally. These options provide different ways to help manage your condition effectively.
