Protease inhibitors are used to treat HIV. Some also have other uses, such as treating COVID-19 in people at high risk for complications. Protease inhibitors work by blocking the enzyme called protease, which viruses need to make copies of themselves and spread in your body. These medications are usually taken as oral pills. Examples include ritonavir (Norvir), darunavir (Prezista), and Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir / ritonavir). Discuss with your prescriber about which medication best fits your needs for managing your infection.
