Valsartan is a common angiotensin receptor blocker used to treat heart failure, heart attack, and hypertension. In the past, valsartan was only available in tablet form, but a new version of this has been approved.
On December 19th, 2017, the FDA approved Prexxartan, the first oral solution for the treatment of various heart problems like high blood pressure.
What is Prexxartan indicated for?
Prexxartan is indicated for the following:
- High-blood pressure in adults and children 6 years of age and older
- Heart failure
- Stable left-ventricular failure or left ventricular dysfunction after having a heart attack.
How is Prexxartan supplied?
Prexxartan will be available as a 4 mg/ml bottle of oral solution.
Keep in mind that you will need the oral dosage delivery device, like a dropper or syringe if you are taking Prexxartan.
There are no special storage requirements for Prexxaetan as it can be stored at room temperature.
How is Prexxartan to be used?
Your doctor will determine your specific dose of Prexxartan, as it can vary person-to-person depending on what is being treated, age, and weight.
What are the most common side effects associated with Prexxartan?
Side effects include headache, dizziness, diarrhea, stomach pain, tiredness, low blood pressure, joint pain, back pain, increased potassium levels, cough, and kidney problems. Be sure to speak with your doctor if you experience any of these problems for a prolonged period of time.
What is unique about Prexxartan?
Prexxartan is the first and only approved oral liquid dosage form of valsartan in the United States. In the past, many hospitals or compounding pharmacies would create a valsartan suspension by suspending tablet particles into a liquid formulation. This was typically used for pediatric patients.
Are there any other valsartan dosage forms?
Yes. You may recognize valsartan being the active ingredient in Diovan oral tablets. Diovan oral tablet products became available within the past few years under the generic name, valsartan, the same active ingredient in Prexxartan.
