Pravastatin (Pravachol) is an inexpensive drug used to prevent or slow down medical problems, like atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), that are caused by fats clogging the blood vessels. It may also be used to prevent certain types of heart and blood vessel problems in patients with risk factors for heart problems. This drug is slightly more popular than comparable drugs. As of 2006, it is available in generic and brand versions. Generic pravastatin is covered by most Medicare and insurance plans, but some pharmacy coupons or cash prices may be lower.
