5 Ways Pharmacists Can Use GoodRx Beyond Price Comparisons

Nabila Ismail, PharmD

At GoodRx, we’re mostly known for our prescription savings that millions of Americans rely on to access their medications. Over the years, we’ve branched into other areas to further help people find the affordable healthcare they need.

We also know we’re not alone; healthcare professionals do this every day. GoodRx seeks to support the very professionals who go above and beyond to care for their patients and communities on an ongoing basis.

Here are five ways to use GoodRx beyond our price comparisons as a pharmacist:

  1. Medication assistance programs

  2. Scholarships

  3. Drug information

  4. Marketplace

  5. Research data and reports

Medication assistance programs

GoodRx’s Social Impact team works to support pharmacists, help with delivery of essential medications, and contribute to charities that align with our values. We’re currently working with community clinics across the country to provide free medications to patients in need with our medication assistance program.

As a pharmacist, you make sure patients can access and receive their medications, and understand how costs can sometimes be a barrier. Once the assistance program launches, you’ll be able to refer your patients who may be unable to afford their medications to GoodRx.

Scholarships for pharmacy professionals

Pharmacy professionals provide valuable guidance for patients when they’re most in need. The time spent attending school and studying and sacrificing at work does not go unnoticed. GoodRx believes that pharmacy professionals are some of the healthcare system’s unsung heroes, so we support the next generation of healthcare leaders through the GoodRx Pharmacy Innovation Scholarship.

The company awards $1,000 to those with the 10 most innovative ideas, five of them being awarded for PharmD students or graduates and the other five to pharmacy technicians. Applications will be opening up soon for 2021!

If you want to be notified when the application window opens, feel free to subscribe to our newsletter.

Drug information

Finding accurate, comprehensive, and easy to read content on medications can be hard to find, especially when you’re on the job and in a hurry. One thing that’s available on GoodRx — something that is reviewed by healthcare professionals, including both PharmDs and MDs — is drug information.

When you search for a medication on either the GoodRx app or website, on the left you’ll see the Drug Info tab. Here’s what you’ll find there:

  • Description of the drug, including how it works and its indication

  • Dosage forms and typical dosing

  • FAQs

  • List of alternatives

  • Pros and cons of the medication

  • Pharmacist tips

  • Side effects

  • Risks and warnings, including common drug interactions

You can search for a drug and using the dropdown box, you’re easily able to find the generic or brand name.

You can use this prices page to see the different strengths the medication comes in if you don’t know them off hand.

A useful tool as a pharmacist, for example, is one for birth control medications. With a plethora of generics available for each brand, this is a straightforward way to see which one you’re able to switch to when you’re out of stock and there’s no preference by the patient.

You can use this function as a tool to see which birth control pills may be used as a substitute.

Marketplace for telehealth and more

The pandemic has expedited the virtual services provided by board-certified providers, and there seem to be more telehealth services all the time. Whether it is for personal use or as a tool you want to refer to patients, GoodRx’s telehealth marketplace allows for separating and comparing the services from available providers and at what price.

For example, if a patient is suffering from depression, they can select that on the website and see which of our featured providers are suited for mental health services. Some other popular online treatments and services include the following:

  • ADHD

  • Asthma

  • Birth control

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT)

  • Online therapy

  • Pediatrics

  • Prescription refills

  • Pediatrics

These are provided by several online providers, such as:

Marketplace is a tool to make decision-making easier for patients and a great reference for providers.

Labs Marketplace

Along with Marketplace for telehealth services, the Labs Marketplace is available on the GoodRx website for anyone looking for the labs they may need. The most recent addition of the COVID-19 tests consolidates and answers questions that can be filtered by state. Whether you need an antibody test or to see if you have an active test, you can search labs offering those tests with pricing.

Some popular online lab tests include STD panels, HbA1c, food sensitivity, comprehensive metabolic panel, and so on offered by several lab providers, including Everlywell, GoodRxCare, QuestDirect, and ScanWell.

Content for pharmacists and pharmacy staff

GoodRx’s goal is to be the source for healthcare information, whether it be drug prices, fill trends, COVID-19 information, and more. Our team of healthcare professionals, economists, and analysts work with many institutions to share these insights and reports.

We report and collect data on:

  • Pharmacy profession satisfaction and statistics

  • The needs of pharmacists

  • Drug price increases

  • Health equity and disparities

Blogs by pharmacists

Keeping up with the healthcare industry, regulatory changes, new drug approvals, and advancements in the pandemic is not easy. Every two weeks, we send two newsletters to our audience of pharmacists and other healthcare providers. Content varies from clinical news and knowledge, practice management, and patient issues to advocacy and career and life. All of our content for pharmacists is written by pharmacists themselves who share their knowledge and experience. There are also posts for pharmacy students written by pharmacy students sharing their stories, residency journey, and their tips and tricks.

Some of our articles include:

While we know that these may not be all the tools needed to solve higher-level problems, GoodRx’s aim is to support for our pharmacy professionals who do so much for their patients, while providing access to drug information and scholarship opportunities, along with creating resources for pharmacists to access when interacting with their patients.
