Too Good to Be True? How an Army Vet Saved 90% on His Medications

One of the things we get a lot from our users is that they’re pretty skeptical when they first hear about GoodRx. In addition to gathering and listing prescription drug prices from US pharmacies so people can easily compare costs, GoodRx also publishes coupon prices that can be substantially lower than co-pays and retail prices.

When we receive a comment like Rosario’s below, we like to try to learn how the user got over those initial doubts.

Rosario Francisco review

Originally hailing from Los Angeles, California, Mark and his wife, Rosario, now live in El Paso, Texas with their three dogs (Xena, Buffalo, and Buster). Mark is a veteran who sustained back injuries when he was on active duty. After leaving the army, he worked as a paramedic where his injuries only worsened. He ended up getting surgery for his back, and that’s when he and Rosario discovered that his health insurance wouldn’t cover some of the medications he needed for recovery.

Luckily, Rosario had remembered seeing a GoodRx ad online a couple of years ago and decided to look up the medications on the website. She couldn’t believe it when she saw that the coupon price GoodRx listed for one of his medications was about 90% cheaper than what they would have had to pay out of pocket.

Since Rosario had never heard of GoodRx and didn’t know anyone who had used it before, she called her local pharmacy to see if they would accept the GoodRx coupon. She thought, what was the worst that could happen?

When the pharmacist told Rosario they would indeed honor the discount, she was beside herself. “It’s really amazing that a service like this exists. With the way health insurance is, even for our veterans, it’s hard to believe there are some people who just want to help others who cannot repay them.”

In addition to taking care of Mark and their dogs, Rosario is the primary caregiver for her disabled mother. Although her mother has good insurance, Rosario makes a point to check GoodRx whenever she needs a new medication in case there’s a better price listed.

When we talked to Rosario, one of the first things she said was that  she was surprised GoodRx existed because “it seemed to good to be true”. Given the number of people, like Rosario, who are surprised at how much drug prices can vary store to store and day by day, we think we have a lot of work to do!
