Frequently asked questions about Oxycodone/ibuprofen

What is oxycodone/ibuprofen?
Oxycodone/ibuprofen is a combination medication that treats moderate-to-severe pain. Oxycodone is an opioid that binds to certain parts of your brain, called mu-opioid receptors, to change how you react to pain. This helps decrease how much pain you feel. Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It blocks the inflammation process in your body, which relieves pain, fever, and swelling. Oxycodone/ibuprofen should only be used for a short period of time (maximum of 7 days) because it has serious risks of stomach bleeds, stomach ulcers, abuse, misuse, and overdose.
Is oxycodone/ibuprofen still available?
No. Oxycodone/ibuprofen is no longer available as a brand or generic medication in the United States.
Why was oxycodone/ibuprofen discontinued?
It's unclear why oxycodone/ibuprofen was discontinued. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (the FDA), oxycodone/ibuprofen wasn't discontinued because it was unsafe or didn't work well. It's possible that it was removed from the market due to the availability of newer and safer combination pain medications.
