Insulin antagonists are used to treat severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Certain medications in this class can also be used before diagnostic imaging procedures, such as an MRI. When used to treat hypoglycemia, they increase blood glucose (sugar) levels, either by stimulating the liver to release stored glucose or by blocking the pancreas from releasing insulin. Insulin antagonists come in different forms, including injectable and nasal options. Examples include glucagon (Glucagen, Baqsimi, Gvoke), dasiglucagon (Zegalogue), and diazoxide (Proglycem). You can discuss with your healthcare team which option might be right for you.
