The iron component helps to prevent anemia, which can occur due to heavy menstrual bleeding. These medications are available as oral tablets. Examples include norethindrone acetate / ethinyl estradiol / ferrous fumarate (Junel 24 Fe, Lo Loestrin FE) and levonorgestrel / ethinyl estradiol / ferrous bisglycinate (Balcoltra, Joyeaux).
