Used for Diabetes Type 2
Used for Diabetes Type 2

Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) is a combination medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It's meant to be taken along with healthy diet and exercise to lower your blood sugar. This medication is taken by mouth, typically once daily. A rare, but serious side effect of Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) is that it can cause swelling from fluids. This means that it can worsen heart failure in people with a history of this condition. You'll need regular blood tests while receiving this medication to make sure it's safe for your kidneys and to make sure your blood sugar is under control.

What is Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone)?

What is Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) used for?

  • Type 2 diabetes in adults

How Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) works

Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) is a combination of two medications:

  • Pioglitazone is thiazolidinedione. It works on the fat and muscle cells to help them become more sensitive to insulin. Insulin is a hormone that controls your blood sugar. When your body is able to better use insulin, it can help move more blood sugar into cells to be used for energy. Pioglitazone also works on the liver cells to lower the amount of sugar your liver produces.

  • Alogliptin is dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. It works by blocking DPP-4, an enzyme (protein) that breaks down certain hormones in your body. These hormones tell your body to make more insulin and to produce less sugar. When these hormones are low, your body ends up with low levels of insulin and high levels of blood sugar. Alogliptin blocks DPP-4, which can help produce more insulin to lower blood sugar levels.

    • Talk to a provider if you notice blurry vision or vision changes while taking Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone). This is because Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) can worsen an eye condition called macular edema, which is more commonly seen in people with high blood sugar. Make sure to get your regular eye exams so your provider can make sure this medication is safe for you.

        • It's common for your blood sugar levels to go up when your body is under stress. Therefore, let your provider know if you experience a fever, an infection, an accident, or are undergoing surgery. Your provider might need to adjust the dose of Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) to help control your blood sugar.

          • It's important to eat healthy and exercise regularly to keep your blood sugar under control. Make sure to work with your provider on a diet and exercise plan while taking Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone).

              faqs

Frequently asked questions about Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone)

Can I use insulin if I'm taking Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone)?
It's possible that your provider might prescribe Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) and insulin for you at the same time. If you're taking these medications together, you need to be careful to monitor your blood sugar. Taking Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) with insulin (or other medications that raises your insulin levels, such as glipizide) puts you at higher risk for low blood sugar levels, which can be life-threatening. Symptoms of low blood sugar include feeling shaky, being nervous or anxious, fast heartbeat, sweating or body chills, confusion, and excessive hunger. If you're taking these medications together, carry glucose tablets or fast-acting sugars with you so you can treat low blood sugar when needed. Talk to your provider or pharmacist if you're concerned about this risk.
Can Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) interact with other medications?
Yes, Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) can interact with some medications. Always let your provider or pharmacist know what medications you're taking, including over-the-counter products and supplements, before you start. For example, if you're taking gemfibrozil (Lopid) at the same time, this medication can raise the level of Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) in your body, thus putting you at higher risk of side effects. In this case, your provider might lower the dose of Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) to avoid side effects. Another example is that if you're taking rifampin (Rifadin) at the same time, then Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) might not work as well, which can worsen your diabetes. In this case, your provider might adjust your dose of Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) to prevent your blood sugar from going up.
Can I take Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) if I'm pregnant?
Speak with your provider about taking Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) during pregnancy. Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) hasn’t been well studied in human pregnancy. But animal studies showed that pioglitazone might be linked to certain health problems, such as slowed growth and low birth weight in babies. Because it's important to treat diabetes during pregnancy, your provider can discuss options that are safe for you.
Can I drink alcohol while taking Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone)?
It's best to avoid or limit drinking alcohol if you're taking Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone). This is because drinking alcohol in general raises your risk of low blood sugar. In addition, some symptoms of having too much alcohol are similar to symptoms of low blood sugar, which makes it hard to notice the difference between the two. If you have symptoms of shaking, headache, cold sweat, fast heartbeat, or dizziness, drink half of a cup (4 ounces) of juice or regular soda right away to bring your sugar levels back up.
Can Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) cause bladder cancer?
It's not clear whether Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) can cause bladder cancer. There's been evidence of a link to bladder cancer in some studies, but not in other studies. If you've had bladder cancer, talk to your provider first before starting Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) because your provider might switch you to a different medication. If you have questions about Oseni (alogliptin / pioglitazone) and bladder cancer, talk with your provider.

Keep in mind that people with type 2 diabetes or heart problems might also have different liver problems, including fatty liver.
