Save on related medications
According to a 2024 KFF survey, more than 8 in 10 women who are 18 to 49 years old used contraception in the previous year. While oral birth control pills are among the most commonly used methods, some women prefer contraception that they don't have to take every day. Vaginal birth control rings, small devices placed inside of the vagina to prevent pregnancy, offer an alternative to “the pill.”
NuvaRing (etonogestrel / ethinyl estradiol) is a type of vaginal birth control ring. Each ring prevents pregnancy for 4 weeks and is discarded monthly. NuvaRing contains two hormones — a progestin and an estrogen — that stop the ovaries from releasing eggs, which is the primary way it works to prevent pregnancy.
NuvaRing can be a convenient and effective contraceptive because you don’t have to remember to take it every day like an oral birth control pill. However, it's important to note that it does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Here’s more information about the cost of NuvaRing with and without insurance.
How much does NuvaRing cost?
NuvaRing can cost up to $200 per ring without insurance or discounts. Here are some average cash prices for NuvaRing and its generic alternatives.

What factors affect the cost of NuvaRing?
Without insurance, what you pay for NuvaRing depends on several factors, including your:
Pharmacy: Pharmacies set their own prices for medications.
Location: Medications can vary in cost based on region.
Fill quantity: Medications can be less costly when purchased in bulk. You may pay less per ring if you fill a prescription for a NuvaRing box, which contains 3 rings.
Does insurance cover NuvaRing?
Almost all Medicaid plans cover NuvaRing, but very few Medicare plans do. About half of commercial plans and a slightly lower percentage of Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace plans cover NuvaRing. Some insurance plans fully cover NuvaRing, meaning there are no out-of-pocket costs for enrollees.
If you have insurance, review your plan’s summary of benefits and coverage and formulary (list of covered medications) to determine whether NuvaRing is covered. If not, contact your plan provider and ask about your coverage options. You can also discuss alternatives, such as NuvaRing generics, with your prescriber or pharmacist.
To get coverage for NuvaRing, some health insurance plans require enrollees to get prior authorization and/or do step therapy. (Step therapy is when you're required to try other, usually lower-cost, options first.) Nearly one-third of Medicaid plans require prior authorization, as do some commercial plans.
How different insurance plans cover NuvaRing
The following chart shows the likelihood of having coverage for NuvaRing with different types of insurance plans, as well as the likelihood of needing to obtain prior authorization or complete step therapy.

Tips if your medication isn’t covered by insurance
If your insurance doesn’t cover NuvaRing, you still have options:
Use a GoodRx coupon to save on your prescription with an exclusive discount. This discount lowers NuvaRing’s price to less than the cost of most generic versions.
Ask your prescriber about less costly options that meet your needs. This could mean switching to a lower-cost brand-name medication or a medication that has a generic option available at a lower price.
Request a formulary exception from your insurance company. If your request is denied, you have the right to file an appeal with your plan.
When it’s time for open enrollment, compare different health insurance plans to find one that provides coverage for this medication.
NuvaRing side effects: Headaches, vaginal discharge, and nausea are some of the side effects you could experience when using this birth control option.

Ways to save on NuvaRing
Whether or not you have insurance, there are ways to reduce the cost of NuvaRing. Here are four options.
1. Use a GoodRx coupon
You may be able to use a free GoodRx coupon to lower the price of your NuvaRing prescription. Without insurance, a single NuvaRing costs an average of $584.69. You could pay as low as $495.53 for NuvaRing with a GoodRx coupon at certain pharmacies. GoodRx has an exclusive discount on NuvaRing that drops its price to less than the cost of most generic versions. This exclusive discount applies to NuvaRing products manufactured by Advanz Pharm (U.S.) Corp.

Visit www.goodrx.com, or download the GoodRx app on your mobile device, and use a coupon today. Here’s how:
On the app or website, type “NuvaRing” in the search field.
Choose the desired quantity. Input your ZIP code or address, or select “Use my current location,” so you see results for pharmacies near you.
Choose how to receive your coupon. You may want it emailed or texted to you, or you may want to print it out.
Take your coupon with you to the pharmacy. Present the coupon to the pharmacy’s staff early in the filling process to help avoid delays at the pickup counter.
2. Check if you’re eligible for a program that provides low-cost birth control
If you don’t have health insurance, what you’ll pay for NuvaRing will depend on factors like your geographic location and the specific pharmacy or clinic you use.
Your costs may be lower if you receive the vaginal ring at a safety-net clinic such as Planned Parenthood, because these sites participate in the federal Title X Family Planning Program, which allows them to provide low-cost or free contraceptives. Also, some states have programs that provide contraceptives at a low cost or no cost. For example, Massachusetts has a law called ACCESS that enables eligible residents to receive a year's supply of free prescription birth control with one trip to the pharmacy.
3. Tap into your HSA, FSA, or HRA
Consider using a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA), or health reimbursement arrangement (HRA) to pay for your medication. These accounts have multiple tax benefits when they’re used to pay for qualified healthcare expenses. This can reduce your out-of-pocket costs through tax savings. But be sure to review your account’s contribution limits, rollover limits, and eligible expenses.
4. Consider other savings strategies, like discounts at the pharmacy
You may be able to reduce your cost per ring if you buy a larger supply, such as a NuvaRing box, which contains 3 rings. Or if you have healthcare coverage, you may be able to save by using your insurance plan’s mail-order pharmacy.
The bottom line
NuvaRing (etonogestrel / ethinyl estradiol) is a vaginal birth control ring: a small, flexible plastic device you insert into your vagina. NuvaRing releases hormones that prevent pregnancy.
Without insurance, a single NuvaRing costs an average of $584.69. You could pay as low as $495.53 for NuvaRing with a GoodRx coupon at certain pharmacies. GoodRx has an exclusive discount on NuvaRing that drops its price to less than the cost of many generic versions.
You may also be able to get NuvaRing at a discount or for free from Planned Parenthood or other clinics that participate in the Title X Family Planning Program. Some states also have programs that offer low-cost or free prescription birth control.

Methodology
We obtained national prescription coverage data for each medication from Managed Markets Insight & Technology (MMIT). The data reflects health insurance coverage as of August 2025.
We calculated the percentage of enrollees in plans that cover each medication by dividing the number of enrollees covered for the medication within a specific insurance channel (e.g., ACA, Medicare, Medicaid) by the total number of enrollees in all plans within that channel.
We determined the percentage of enrollees in plans with a prior authorization requirement by calculating the proportion of enrollees in plans that required prior authorization for the medication within each channel.
Finally, we measured the percentage of enrollees in plans with a step therapy requirement by calculating the proportion of enrollees in plans that imposed step therapy requirements for the medication in each channel.
These estimates, derived from national MMIT coverage data, provide insight into health insurance coverage for each medication. They take into account restrictions such as prior authorization, step therapy, and quantity limits. The percentages are expressed relative to the total number of enrollees covered by various insurance channels, including ACA plans, commercial (excluding ACA) plans, Medicare, and Medicaid (both state-run and managed care plans).
