What’s the typical Nurtec ODT dosage?

The recommended Nurtec ODT dosage depends on whether you’re taking it for migraine treatment or prevention. It comes as a 75 mg ODT, making it a good option if you have trouble swallowing pills.

Below, we detail Nurtec ODT dosages for migraine treatment and prevention. This medication is only FDA approved for adults, so you won’t find children’s Nurtec ODT dosage information in this guide.

Good to know: You shouldn’t use Nurtec ODT for both migraine treatment and prevention. This combination hasn’t been studied for safety or effectiveness.

Migraine treatment dosage

The typical Nurtec ODT dosage for treating migraines is 1 tablet (75 mg) at the first sign of a migraine. Don’t take more than 1 tablet in 24 hours. And don’t take more than 18 tablets in a 30-day period. The safety of taking more than 18 tablets per month hasn’t been well studied.

If you have more than 18 migraines per month, talk to your prescriber. They may suggest starting a medication to help prevent migraines. They may also make changes to your current medication if you’re already taking something for migraine prevention.

Migraine prevention dosage

The typical Nurtec ODT dosage for preventing migraines is 1 tablet every other day. If needed, you can take medication to treat migraines while taking Nurtec ODT for prevention. But these treatments should be in different classes of medications. For example, you may be prescribed Nurtec ODT for migraine prevention and a triptan, such as sumatriptan (Imitrex, Tosymra, Zembrace SymTouch), for migraine treatment.

How to take Nurtec ODT

If you’ve never taken Nurtec ODT before, it’s good to review how to take it. You shouldn’t swallow it whole like a traditional pill. The four steps below explain how to take Nurtec ODT:

1. Make sure your hands are dry before handling your dose. Wet hands can cause Nurtec ODT to start dissolving prematurely.

2. Peel back the foil that covers the blister pack. Don’t push the ODT through the foil. This can damage it or cause it to crumble. Only remove the dose you’ll be taking from the pack. You should store Nurtec ODT in its blister pack until you’re ready to take a dose.

3. Place the ODT on or under your tongue. Allow it to dissolve (this takes a few seconds).

4. Swallow normally after Nurtec ODT fully dissolves. You don’t need to drink water afterwards.

There aren’t any suggested Nurtec ODT dosage changes for people with certain health conditions. But there may be times where you need to avoid taking it. This may be the case for people with severe liver or kidney problems and those taking certain interacting medications.

People with liver problems

It’s recommended that people with severe liver problems avoid taking Nurtec ODT. People with mild or moderate liver problems can generally take the typical Nurtec ODT dosages as described above. Make sure your migraine care team is aware if you have a history of liver problems, so they can determine if it’s safe for you to take Nurtec ODT.

The liver helps to break down Nurtec ODT. So if your liver isn’t working as expected, the medication may start to build up in your system. This can raise your risk of side effects, such as nausea and stomach pain.

People with kidney problems

People with mild, moderate, or severe kidney problems can take the typical Nurtec ODT dosages as described above. But it’s recommended that people with end-stage kidney disease or those receiving dialysis avoid Nurtec ODT. This medication hasn’t been well studied in this population. So experts aren’t sure whether it would be safe or work well for them.

People taking medications that interact with Nurtec ODT

There are many medications that affect enzymes (proteins) that help break down Nurtec ODT. Some (inducers) speed up these enzymes, while others (inhibitors) slow them down. Your pharmacist is a great resource to tell you if you take any medications that interact with Nurtec ODT.

If you take certain enzyme inducers, they can make Nurtec ODT less effective. It’s recommended to avoid that combination. Examples of inducers include:

• Carbamazepine (Tegretol, Equetro)

• Phenobarbital

• Phenytoin (Dilantin, Phenytek)

• Rifampin

• St. John’s wort

If you take certain enzyme inhibitors, they can raise your risk for Nurtec ODT side effects. In some cases, separating Nurtec ODT doses by at least 2 days can help you avoid issues. But in other cases, you may need to avoid Nurtec ODT altogether. Examples of inhibitors include:

• Clarithromycin

• Fluconazole (Diflucan)

• Grapefruit juice

• Medications that contain ritonavir (Norvir), such as Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir / ritonavir)

• Amiodarone (Pacerone)

• Cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Gengraf)

• Ranolazine (Ranexa)

What happens if you miss a dose of Nurtec ODT?

If you’re taking Nurtec ODT for migraine treatment, missed doses shouldn’t be a concern. This medication is only taken as needed for migraines. Just be careful not to exceed the recommended 18 tablets in a 30-day period.

If you miss a dose of Nurtec ODT for migraine prevention, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. But if there’s less than 24 hours (1 day) until your next scheduled dose, skip the missed tablet. Don’t take two doses within a 24-hour period.
