Save on related medications

Nurtec ODT (rimegepant) is one of several migraine medications available. It’s different from many options because it’s FDA approved for both migraine treatment and prevention. Nurtec ODT works by blocking the actions of a protein in your body called calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). This protein can trigger migraines.

With appointments, prescription costs, and potentially needing time off work for migraine attacks, the cost of managing chronic migraines can add up. If you’re wondering how much Nurtec ODT costs, you’re not alone. Below are details about the cost of Nurtec ODT, the likelihood of insurance coverage, and tips for savings.

Which factors affect the cost of Nurtec ODT?

There are many factors that can affect what you’ll pay for Nurtec ODT, including:

  • Location: Prescription prices vary in different areas of the U.S. For instance, people filling prescriptions in Atlanta pay less overall than those in New Orleans.

  • Pharmacy: Even within the same area, different pharmacies may charge different prices. Using GoodRx can help you compare prices for Nurtec ODT at pharmacies around you.

  • Why you’re taking Nurtec ODT: If you’re using Nurtec ODT to treat migraines, you may not take it as often as someone who’s using it to prevent migraines. In other words, you may not need to buy as many tablets, or you may not fill your prescription as frequently.

  • If you have insurance coverage: If you have insurance and it covers Nurtec ODT, your prescription costs will likely be lower than if you’re uninsured or if your insurance doesn’t cover it.

Does insurance cover Nurtec ODT?

Most insurance plans cover Nurtec ODT. In general, commercial and Medicaid plans are slightly more likely to cover it than Medicare plans or those purchased through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace. Still, the majority of Medicare and ACA plans provide coverage for Nurtec ODT.

It’s common for plans across all insurance types to need a prior authorization before they’ll cover Nurtec ODT. Many plans also require people to complete step therapy (trying other medications first).

Review your plan’s summary of benefits and coverage and formulary (list of covered medications). This can help you determine if your plan covers Nurtec ODT. If you’re unsure, you can also call the member services phone number on your prescription insurance card.

Tips if Nurtec ODT isn’t covered by insurance

If your insurance doesn’t cover Nurtec ODT, try these options:

  • Request a formulary exception from your insurance company. If your request is denied, you have the right to appeal the decision to seek coverage.

  • Discuss alternative migraine treatments with your prescriber. There are many that have lower-cost generic versions available or may be preferred by your insurance provider.

  • When it’s time for open enrollment, compare different health insurance plans to find one that provides better coverage for what you need.

Ways to save on Nurtec ODT

Regardless of insurance status, there are ways you can save money on Nurtec ODT. Explore these options with your prescriber and pharmacist to see how much you may save.

1. See if you qualify for a copay savings card

If you have commercial insurance, you may be eligible to pay as little as $0 per month for Nurtec ODT with a manufacturer copay card. The card offers a maximum annual benefit of $7,000.

To qualify for the Nurtec ODT copay card, you must:

  • Have commercial insurance that pays for part of Nurtec ODT

  • Not have insurance coverage through a state or federally funded insurance program, such as Medicare, Medicare, or Tricare

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Live in the U.S. (including Puerto Rico)

The first time you use the copay card, you may be able to receive up to 16 tablets (2 dose packs) of Nurtec ODT at no cost. Keep in mind that your prescriber may need to adjust your prescription to allow you to fill 16 tablets at one time.

2. Check if you’re eligible for a patient assistance program

Nurtec ODT’s manufacturer, Pfizer, offers a patient assistance program for the medication, called Pfizer RxPathways. People who meet certain financial requirements may be able to get Nurtec ODT for free through this program. If you’re uninsured or underinsured, consider seeing if you qualify.

To be eligible for Nurtec ODT’s patient assistance program, you must:

  • Be uninsured or be covered by a state or federally funded insurance plan and be unable to afford your prescription

  • Be a resident of the U.S. (including U.S. territories)

  • Have a prescription for Nurtec ODT written by a healthcare professional who’s licensed in the U.S. (including U.S. territories)

  • Meet certain income requirements — your pretex income cannot exceed 300% of the federal poverty level, adjusted for household size

  • Be able to show proof in income

For more information about Nurtec ODT’s patient assistance program and to see if you’re eligible, call 1-866-473-0088.

3. Ask about a 90-day supply

Some insurance plans charge a lower copay per month when you fill a 3-month supply. They may also offer discounts if you fill your prescriptions through their preferred mail order pharmacies. Check with your insurance provider to see if this is available for you.

4. Tap into your HSA, FSA, or HRA

If you have a health savings account (HSA), a flexible spending account (FSA), or a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA), you can use these funds to pay for your Nurtec ODT prescription. These accounts let you contribute pretax funds to pay for qualifying medical expenses, such as copays. This can help you save money through tax savings.

Keep in mind that FSAs have an expiration date, and you have to use your funds before that date passes. HSA money doesn’t expire, allowing you to save funds and use them later. HRAs may or may not roll over, depending on your plan.

The bottom line

The average retail cost of 1 Nurtec ODT (rimegepant) dose pack is $1234.41. Each pack contains 8 tablets. Most insurance plans cover Nurtec ODT. But it’s common for insurance providers to require prior authorization or step therapy before they’ll cover it.

Nurtec ODT doesn’t have a generic version. If you have commercial insurance, you may be eligible to pay as little as $0 per month with a manufacturer copay card. If you’re uninsured or underinsured, Nurtec ODT’s patient assistance program may provide the medication at no cost.

Methodology

We obtained national prescription coverage data for each medication from Managed Markets Insight & Technology (MMIT). The data reflects health insurance coverage as of September 2025.

We calculated the percentage of enrollees in plans that cover each medication by dividing the number of enrollees covered for the medication within a specific insurance channel (e.g., ACA, Medicare, Medicaid) by the total number of enrollees in all plans within that channel.

We determined the percentage of enrollees in plans with a prior authorization requirement by calculating the proportion of enrollees in plans that required prior authorization for the medication within each channel.

Finally, we measured the percentage of enrollees in plans with a step therapy requirement by calculating the proportion of enrollees in plans that imposed step therapy requirements for the medication in each channel.

These estimates, derived from national MMIT coverage data, provide insight into health insurance coverage for each medication. They take into account restrictions such as prior authorization, step therapy, and quantity limits. The percentages are expressed relative to the total number of enrollees covered by various insurance channels, including ACA plans, commercial (excluding ACA) plans, Medicare, and Medicaid (both state-run and managed care plans).
