What is Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone)?

What is Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) used for?

  • Treatment and symptom relief of fungal skin infections (e.g., skin inflammation, itching)

How Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) works

Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) is a combination of two medications:

  • Tolnaftate is a topical antifungal medication. It works by blocking a protein that fungi need to grow. This stops the fungi from spreading and kills them.

  • Hydrocortisone is a topical corticosteroid. When it’s used on the skin, hydrocortisone lowers the amount of inflammatory chemicals that cause redness, itching, and swelling. This helps to decrease skin inflammation.

Pharmacist tips for Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone)

pharmacist
  • Before applying Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone), wash your hands and clean the affected area(s) of your skin.

    • Use Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) only on the outside of your body (e.g., skin). Don't swallow this medication, and never use it in your eyes, nose, or ears.

      • Wash your hands after using Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) to help prevent getting the medication in your eyes. Rinse your eyes with water or saline if you accidentally get it in your eyes. Contact your primary care provider if the irritation doesn't go away.

        • Don't use Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) on your face, underarms, or groin areas unless your primary care provider tells you to do so. The skin in these areas are more sensitive and side effects are more likely to happen.

          • If you're using other corticosteroid-containing products, check with your primary care provider first before using Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone). Using multiple corticosteroids can raise your risk of side effects.

            • Don't cover the treated area with a bandage after applying Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) unless directed by your primary care provider. Don't use this medication on your child unless directed by a pediatrician. If you're applying this medication around the diaper area, don't use tight fitting diapers or plastic pants on your toddler. Doing so might affect how much medication gets absorbed.

              • For Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) topical liquid: Use the brush applicator to apply the medication on the skin around the nails. Don't apply Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) directly on your nails since this medication doesn't work well for nail fungal infections.

                • Store Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) up and away and out of children's reach and sight. This prevents them from accidentally swallowing medicine that was left out. Always put medication away every time you use it. If you think that your child might’ve accidentally swallowed Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone), call your Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 right away even if you aren't completely sure.

Frequently asked questions about Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone)

What fungal infection can Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) be used for?
Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) can be used for certain skin fungal infections, such as ringworm and athlete's foot. The tolnaftate can help fight the infection, and the hydrocortisone can help ease redness or itching that's caused by the infection. Your healthcare professional (HCP) will let you know if Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) is appropriate for you.
How long does Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) take to work?
Depending on your infection, you might feel some symptoms improve within 2 to 3 days of starting Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone). But it can take longer to treat the infection. Make sure to continue using Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) for the entire treatment length that your primary care provider prescribed. This will help make sure that the infection is completely gone and help lower the risk of it coming back.
Can you put Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) on your face?
Don't apply Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) on your face unless directed by your primary care provider. This is because Mycozyl HC contains hydrocortisone, a topical corticosteroid. In general, you should avoid applying corticosteroid on sensitive skin areas, such as face. Doing so cna raise your risk of side effects, such as skin thinning or stretch marks.
Can you use Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) while pregnant?
Talk with your obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) about the benefits and risks of using Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) during pregnancy. Mycozyl HC contains a lower strength of hydrocortisone that's typically considered safe to used during pregnancy. But it's unclear whether tolnaftate is safe during pregnancy since it hasn't been well-studied in pregnant people.
What's the difference between Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) and Lotrisone (clotrimazole / betamethasone)?
Both Mycozyl HC (tolnaftate / hydrocortisone) and Lotrisone (clotrimazole / betamethasone) are topical medications used to treat skin fungal infections. They both contain an antifungal medication and a topical steroid. Both medications are applied onto the skin twice daily. A big difference between the two medications is the strength of the topical steroid. Mycozyl HC contains a low-potency steroid (hydrocortisone 0.667%), whereas Lotrisone contains a moderate-to-high potency steroid (betamethasone). Ask your primary care provider about the pros and cons of each product to decide which one is the best choice for you.
