What Is a Yeast Infection?

A yeast infection is caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. Candida albicans thrives in moist and warm environments like the underarms or the vagina in women. Symptoms of vaginal yeast infection includes yellowish discharge and pain.

A yeast infection is easily treatable by either over-the-counter medications or prescriptions. Common drug classes used to treat yeast infections are azole antifungals, polyene antifungals, and sulfa antibiotics.
