From Uninsured to Insured, Troy Still Saves with GoodRx

Nearly 1 in 3 adults in the United States have high blood pressure, and 12% are currently living with high cholesterol. Both of these conditions can be considered “silent” since they don’t always have recognizable symptoms. If left unchecked, they can lead to serious complications like heart attack or stroke. But both high blood pressure and high cholesterol can be treated and managed through lifestyle changes and medication. This is why it’s so important for patients to have access to affordable medications. Troy is one of those patients.

Troy works full-time and lives with his wife in Chesapeake, Virginia. Between the two of them, they take a total of 8 daily medications for health conditions including high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Troy knew of GoodRx—having received a card in the mail—but it wasn’t until last spring that he considered using it. That was when he lost his health insurance through his former employer.

Troy’s wife is retired and their family was unsure of how soon Troy would get another job and regain their health coverage. Troy started comparing prices through GoodRx to help with medication costs in the meantime. He was pleasantly surprised to find out about the significant savings available to him. The biggest discount was on one of Troy’s medications, bringing it down from the retail price of $70 to $12, and cutting the majority of his wife’s medications by an average of 50%.

Fortunately, Troy found a new job with health benefits and only had to fill a few prescriptions in between, but he was reassured knowing he could maintain his health and access his medications at an affordable price during this time. Since going back to work, he has continued to utilize GoodRx, even with health insurance. GoodRx coupon prices still beat his copay prices.

Since then, Troy has thoughtfully created an entire spreadsheet to lay out cost comparisons between his copays and GoodRx prices. He’s grateful that he and his wife continue to save. Troy said he regularly uses the GoodRx app on his phone during doctor visits to compare drug prices between pharmacies before selecting which location to have his prescription sent to. Even with insurance, Troy’s savings through GoodRx generally range from 30% to 60%, and he cannot stress enough what a relief it is to see the difference GoodRx makes for his wallet.

GoodRx has allowed him to focus less on health expenses and spend more time with his grandkids, gardening with his wife, and, as he puts it, living his “nice, quiet suburban life.”
