Julie and Jeff: How a Retired Couple Finds Prescription Savings while RV Living

Julie and her husband Jeff live in the quiet western suburbs of Chicago, enjoying retired life and the adventures that come with long road trips in their RV. 

“RV life can be whatever you want it to be,” explains Julie. “A lot of people just continue their regular routine like they do at home. Others take advantage of the location to spend more time outside or pursue hobbies that might be hard to do staying put. Living in an RV resort for a few months is like being part of a ‘popup neighborhood,’ where people get to know each other quickly because we all spend quite a bit of time together.” 

But life on the road can present its share of problems, too. Julie and Jeff live with allergies and, between the two of them, have nine prescriptions to fill. We got to know Julie when, while exploring in their RV, she tweeted about the savings she’d discovered using GoodRx. 

At the time, Julie and her husband were nearing the end of their 18-month COBRA coverage, and so she had been researching the best options for filling all of their prescriptions before their coverage expired. When Julie did a price comparison between mail-order coverage and using coupons through GoodRx, she was astounded to learn the savings. Julie and Jeff are no strangers to medical expenses and the challenges that come with navigating complicated insurance coverage. Years ago, when their oldest son was in the first grade, they received the news that parents hope to never hear: their son had been diagnosed with cancer. 

“It was a year-long medical odyssey,” Julie recalls. “Surgery to remove the cancerous tumor, radiation, chemotherapy.” 

Julie had to quickly become well-versed in insurance protocol and learn how insurance companies work in order to get her son the medical treatments he needed under the family’s insurance plan. Their son went on to beat cancer three times and now, as an adult, proudly lives cancer free. 

Through her son’s journey with cancer, Julie realized that researching all the available insurance options is always worth the time and effort.
