Key takeaways:

  • In 2022, healthcare providers saved their patients an average of more than $9,000 by using GoodRx.

  • Collectively, family practice providers saved their patients the most on their prescription medications through GoodRx, with a total savings of over $4.5 billion in 2022.

  • Urology providers had the highest average savings per provider of any specialty. The typical urology provider saved their patients an average of $216,827 on prescription medications.

In addition to providing quality care, healthcare providers can make a big difference in their patients’ lives by helping them save money on their prescription medications with GoodRx. Patients can then dedicate the savings towards improving the well-being of themselves and their families. This is especially important as inflation continues to increase the cost of basic goods and services. GoodRx offers savings opportunities for healthcare professionals as well.

Data from GoodRx highlights the tremendous impact providers can have on their patients’ lives when they refer patients to GoodRx. For example, providers saved their patients an average of $9,049 on medications in 2022. What’s more, an average of 60 GoodRx prescription claims were associated with the typical provider last year. Each of these claims led to an average savings of $151.

Let’s dig further into the data and explore how providers helped their patients with GoodRx last year.

Healthcare provider savings by state

Healthcare providers who use GoodRx serve patients across the country. The map below displays the average savings per provider in each state for 2022.

Last year, Indiana had the largest annual savings through GoodRx per provider. There, healthcare providers saved their patients an average of $13,870.

Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina followed Indiana with average annual savings of $13,612, $13,588, $12,736, and $12,609 per provider, respectively.

Southern states made up a majority of the top five states for average annual savings on medications per provider. This trend aligns with the findings in a recent GoodRx analysis in which we identified that southern cities were becoming some of the most expensive cities for prescription medications in the country.

Interestingly, the states that ranked in the top five for highest average annual savings on prescription medications per provider also all ranked in the top half of states whose citizens had multiple chronic health conditions.

According to the United Health Foundation’s 2022 Annual Report, nearly 10% or more of these states’ populations had multiple chronic health conditions. Tennessee had the highest rate at 14.1%, while Georgia had the lowest at 9.8%.

Both of these factors (high medication costs and high rates of multiple conditions) could explain why the average provider in these states is helping more patients save on their prescription medications with GoodRx. When costs are high, there are likely more opportunities for significant discounts and more money saved overall. When the rate of multiple chronic conditions is high, it also seems more likely that patients would require more prescription medications as well as spend more on medications.

Even in states with lower drug costs, healthcare providers are helping their patients save with GoodRx. For example, Denver is the least expensive city for prescription drug costs among those we examined. Medication costs there are over 39% below the national average. However, the typical provider in Colorado was still able to help their patients save an average of $8,462.

Healthcare provider savings by specialty

In addition to examining how much providers in each state helped their patients save on their prescription medications, we also looked at how providers in each medical specialty helped patients save.

The chart below displays the top five specialties with the highest total annual savings through provider referrals to GoodRx. In other words, the number displayed is the total annual amount that was saved among patients who were prescribed medications within each specialty.

Family practice and internal medicine top the list of specialties with the highest total annual savings for their patients through GoodRx. Both specialties have totals well over a billion dollars — $4,535,319,663 and $2,200,077,244, respectively.

On a similar note, we also examined specialties that had the highest average savings per provider in 2022. Urology topped the list, helping patients save an average of $216,827 per provider. Neurology and psychiatry also had six-digit average savings, with $124,810 and $116,220 saved by the typical provider within the specialty, respectively.

Savings like these take the participation of many healthcare providers. So we also examined the specialties that had the largest number of providers who referred patients to GoodRx.

Family practice and internal medicine have both the highest total savings of any specialty as well as the largest provider networks. In 2022, 241,692 family practice providers and 141,865 internal medicine providers helped their patients afford their prescription medications with GoodRx.

Summing it all up

It’s clear that healthcare providers who use GoodRx have had a tremendous impact on their patients’ lives and wallets. Increased awareness is critical to expand the impact of GoodRx savings to as many Americans as possible.

As we all know, the American healthcare system can be confusing and often expensive. However, GoodRx is able to help offset the burden of some of these costs by providing a means for Americans to afford their necessary prescription medications.
