Meet Patrick: Veterinarian technician by day, ghost hunter by night. That’s right, Patrick, a 26-year-old Ohioan, splits his time between his two passions – taking care of animals and investigating paranormal activity (more on that later). He’s also a loyal GoodRx user.
Here’s his story:
Early on as a child, Patrick was diagnosed with hypertension, a condition that runs in his family. His pediatrician wanted to wait and see if he would grow out of it, but Patrick eventually had to start treatment at the age of 18.
Hypertension occurs when blood pushes against the walls of the arteries with more force than normal, putting more pressure against the arteries – hence the name high blood pressure. There are typically no symptoms but if left untreated over time, it can lead to organ damage and other issues like heart disease and stroke. That’s why it’s important to catch and treat hypertension early.
Up until recently, Patrick was paying $5-10 a month for metoprolol (Lopressor) and losartan (Cozaar), two common prescription drugs used to treat high blood pressure. When he was taken off his mom’s insurance, though, he braced himself for the cost of the doctor’s visit and the medications.
At the visit, Patrick’s doctor gave him a few discount cards to help with the costs, so he thought his problems were solved. But while at his local pharmacy, he quickly discovered that the lowest price he would still have to pay was $200 for a 3-month supply. Luckily, he remembered hearing about GoodRx.
“A friend at work had told me about GoodRx so I downloaded it on the spot, put my blood pressure meds in and asked the pharmacist at the counter to try that discount.“
GoodRx was able to take the price of his meds down to $89, which comes out to about $30 a month. Patrick says he’s relieved to be able to afford his medications because he’s had bad experiences with his insurance before, leading to long pauses in his treatment.
Since Patrick’s grown up with hypertension most of his life, he’s tried other things to help manage it. He exercises for an hour 6 days a week and his job requires manual labour. He keeps a healthy diet and doesn’t eat fast food at all. He can slow his heart down and lower his blood pressure through breathing techniques and meditation (but that’s only a short-term fix). And while these things do help to varying degrees, ultimately he needs medication to keep his blood pressure down.
“As many messed up things as there are in this country with health care and all the supposed options, I think your service and app are a godsend and I’m happy I found out about it at the right time.”
Now that Patrick doesn’t have to worry about whether he’ll get his meds month after month, he can get on with doing what he does best – helping animals and people alike! As lead investigator for the Ohio State Paranormal Society, Patrick and his team answer 5-10 calls a month and often travel to help the residents of Ohio investigate disturbances (sometimes paranormal, sometimes not) in their homes. GoodRx loves helping people who help back!
