Ah, the dreaded cold. So frustrating — and so contagious! During this time of the year, it often feels impossible to avoid catching a cold. You might get it from your kids or other people in your close circle. No one wants to suffer for days on end with a stuffy nose and sore throat.

Thankfully, there are ways to reduce the severity of a cold and get back to feeling healthy again faster

I have my own tried-and-tested strategies for getting rid of pesky symptoms quickly (no nasty medicine required). Here’s a look at the five ways I try to get rid of cold symptoms when I'm feeling under the weather.

1. Get plenty of rest and adequate sleep

When I am feeling tired and worn out, a common symptom of catching a cold, I take some time to prioritize getting enough rest and sleep.

More likely than not, when I am feeling so run down, I am in burnout, which makes me more susceptible to getting a cold.

Instead of pushing myself or trying to power through, I listen to my body and try to get adequate sleep. Not only does it help me feel more energized and productive during the day, but it also allows my body to repair and rejuvenate overnight.

Aren't our bodies a wonder, the way they heal themselves when we rest? Bonus tip, which may be a bit nontraditional, but I use eye patches to help de-puff my under-eyes. This also allows me to sleep better.

2. Drink a lot of fluids, such as hot tea and water

“I’m talking about the good stuff: hot tea with honey, ginger, or lemon.” — Nikki Nurse

If you're anything like me, you may underestimate just how important it is to drink plenty of fluids when you want to get rid of a cold.

I’m not just talking about any old liquids. I’m talking about the good stuff: hot tea with honey, ginger, or lemon.

Plenty of water is also on my go-to list for staying hydrated. Not only do these healthy drinks replenish my body with essential fluids, but they also offer a host of other health benefits.

For example, drinking hot tea helps soothe my stomach and clear out any mucus.

3. Eat nutritious foods that boost my immune system

As I go about my daily life, I am always aware that I will encounter all sorts of germs and bacteria that can put my immune system to work. That's why I prioritize giving my immune system a boost with nutrient-rich foods.

I add items that contain high amounts of vitamin C, such as oranges and strawberries, to help strengthen my immune system.

Zinc, which is found in beans and nuts, is another essential nutrient that helps me fight off illness.

While it may be tempting to reach for junk food, especially when I have a cold, choosing healthy options that are packed with vitamins and other nutrients is definitely a smarter choice for my overall health.

4. Use a humidifier and neti pot, and take steamy showers

When I’m trying to get over cold symptoms, I like to turn on my humidifier. It adds moisture to the air and eases my congestion.

Also, taking a steamy shower has been a game-changer for me, and I take things up a notch by adding an aromatherapy steam shower pod. I prefer the citrus-scented pods. They provide me with a much-needed relaxation moment. The steam loosens up mucus and helps me breathe easier. Plus, it's always fun to feel like I'm pampering myself, even when I'm not feeling 100%.

A neti pot with a saltwater solution can also clear the sinuses and bring some relief.

5. Rest and repeat the process until I start to feel better

Last, but not least, I try to remember that it may take some time for my body to fight off a cold. I do my best to remain patient with myself and allow my body the rest it needs to get better. I continue to prioritize good sleep, hydration, and nutritious foods until I start feeling like myself again. I wash my hands regularly. I take time to be extra gentle with myself by pampering my body and senses. This helps me feel better while I am fighting off the cold.

Taking care of yourself and listening to your body are keys to maintaining good health and fighting off any pesky bugs that may come your way.
