Pharmacist tips for Ninjacof-D

pharmacist
  • You can take Ninjacof-D with or without food. Try taking the medication with food if it upsets your stomach to help lessen any stomach side effects.
  • Be sure to use the dosing cup inside of the packaging to measure your dose of Ninjacof-D. Don't use household spoons because they might not be accurate and can cause you to take the wrong dose.
  • The chlophedianol (a cough suppressant) and pyrilamine (an antihistamine) in Ninjacof-D can make you feel sleepy or dizzy during the day. Don't drive or do anything that requires a lot of attention or focus until you know how the medication affects you. Also, avoid drinking alcohol because it can make these side effects worse.
  • The pyrilamine (an antihistamine) and pseudoephedrine (a decongestant) in Ninjacof-D might cause children to become overly excited or energetic. Stop Ninjacof-D and speak to a pediatrician if this happens to your child.
  • Ninjacof-D is only meant to be used temporarily to relieve cold or allergy symptoms. If your symptoms worsen or last longer than a week, or you start to have a fever, rash, or headache, let your healthcare team know. These might be signs that you need more medical attention.
  • Stop taking Ninjacof-D and contact your healthcare team if you experience dizziness, nervousness, or trouble sleeping. These might be side effects from the pseudoephedrine or other medications in Ninjacof-D. Depending on how severe your symptoms are, your care team might lower your dose of Ninjacof-D or ask you to consider alternative medications.
  • Don't start any new medications while taking Ninjacof-D, especially other antihistamines, cough suppressants, or decongestants, without talking to a healthcare professional first. Doing so can raise your risk of overdose and severe side effects, including seizures, hallucinations (seeing things that aren't real), high blood pressure and heart rate, or even death.
  • Ninjacof-D shouldn't be taken with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). This combination can raise your risk for severe side effects (e.g., high blood pressure, dizziness). If you're currently taking an MAOI or have taken one in the last 14 days, ask your primary care provider about safer options to treat your cough, congestion, and allergy symptoms.

Common questions about Ninjacof-D

Certain states might consider Ninjacof-D a controlled substance and have put strict regulations on the medication. This is because the pseudoephedrine in Ninjacof-D has the potential to be misused. Keep in mind that state laws change from time to time. So, it’s best to ask your primary care provider or pharmacist whether Ninjacof-D is a controlled substance in your state and how to safely take the medication.

Yes, Ninjacof-D can be purchased at a pharmacy without a prescription. It's usually located at the pharmacy counter (also called behind the counter). You'll need to show photo identification and provide your signature when you buy the medication since it has the potential to be misused. Ask your pharmacist if you have any questions about purchasing Ninjacof-D.

You might feel sleepy after taking Ninjacof-D because it contains pyrilamine and chlophedianol, 2 medications that can cause sleepiness. But Ninjacof-D also contains pseudoephedrine, a medication that can make it difficult for you to fall asleep. Speak to your primary care provider if the medication is affecting your sleep and daily activities. There might be better options for you to relieve your symptoms.

No. Don't take diphenhydramine (Benadryl) with Ninjacof-D because it already contains the antihistamine pyrilamine. Taking multiple antihistamines raises your risk for overdose, which can cause serious side effects such as poor balance and agitation. To prevent an accidental overdose, read the medication box and package labels carefully of all the medications you're taking. If you're not sure if you're already taking an antihistamine, ask your pharmacist for help.

No, codeine isn't one of the ingredients in Ninjacof-D. But it does have chlophedianol in it, which works as a cough suppressant like codeine.

There aren't any known interactions between acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ninjacof-D. But acetaminophen (Tylenol) isn't a good choice for everyone. For example, it's typically not recommended for people with liver problems, unless taken as directed by their healthcare professional (HCP). Before you use any pain relievers with Ninjacof-D, speak with your primary care provider or pharmacist to make sure it's safe for you to do so.

There's not enough information to say if Ninjacof-D is safe to take while pregnant or breastfeeding. Some studies show a higher risk of birth defects from taking pseudoephedrine (an ingredient in Ninjacof-D) during pregnancy. Also, pseudoephedrine might lower your milk supply. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, don't take Ninjacof-D until you've talked to your obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) first about the risks and benefits of taking the medication. They can also discuss with you about other options to treat your cold or allergy symptoms during pregnancy.

Risks and warnings for Ninjacof-D

Ninjacof-D can cause some serious health issues. This risk may be even higher for certain groups. If this worries you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other options.

Accidental overdose

Ninjacof-D contains a cough suppressant (chlophedianol), antihistamine (pyrilamine), and a decongestant (pseudoephedrine), which can be found in many other over-the-counter products. Using more than one medication containing a cough suppressant, antihistamine (including products used on the skin), or decongestant can lead to an accidental overdose and cause serious side effects. These can include high blood pressure, anxiety or other behavior changes, confusion, seizures, hallucinations, or even death.

Tell your healthcare professional (HCP) or pharmacist about the medications you take before starting Ninjacof-D to make sure it's safe for you. Don't start any new medications while taking Ninjacof-D without talking to your HCP or pharmacist. To prevent an accidental overdose, read package labels carefully. If you're not sure if a product has a cough suppressant, antihistamine, or decongestant, ask your pharmacist. If you or your loved one experiences an accidental overdose, get medical help right away or contact a Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Worsening of certain medical conditions

  • Risk factors: Heart disease or high blood pressure | Thyroid problems | High blood sugar (diabetes) | Glaucoma | Cough from smoking, asthma, or emphysema | Mucus-producing cough | Breathing problems (e.g., emphysema, long-term bronchitis) | Urinary conditions

Ninjacof-D might not be the best choice for you if you're 65 years of age or older, or have certain medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, glaucoma, breathing problems (asthma, or emphysema), thyroid problems, or trouble urinating. Additionally, you might need other treatment if you have a cough that's lasted for a long time, a cough that occurs with smoking, or a cough with a lot of mucus. Let your primary care provider or pharmacist know about the medical conditions you have. Ask them whether Ninjacof-D is safe and appropriate for you to take.
