Pharmacist tips for Jublia (efinaconazole)

pharmacist
  • Apply Jublia (efinaconazole) to your toenail and the surrounding skin only. Don't take it by mouth, use it in your eyes, or place it inside the vagina.

    • Use Jublia (efinaconazole) every day for 48 weeks (about 11 months). Don't stop early, even if your toenails look better, unless your prescriber tells you so. Stopping too soon can make the infection come back stronger.

      • Avoid nail polish while using Jublia (efinaconazole). It's unclear whether it will cause this medication to not work as well. Wait until your infection is gone and your nails healed before applying nail polish again.

        • Jublia (efinaconazole) can cause some redness, itching, and swelling at the application site. Let your prescriber know if these side effects don't go away.

          • Store Jublia (efinaconazole) at room temperature in its original bottle. Keep it away from heat and open flames because the solution is flammable.

            • Before using Jublia (efinaconazole), wash your feet and toes with soap and water and let them dry for at least 10 minutes.

              • Use the brush applicator to apply Jublia (efinaconazole) to the affected toenail(s). Cover the whole nail, the cuticle, the skin around the nail, and the skin under the nail tip.

                • Let Jublia (efinaconazole) dry fully before putting on socks or shoes. If you're treating your big toenail, apply a second coat shortly after.

                  • Wash your hands after using Jublia (efinaconazole). Even with the brush, it’s easy to touch the infected nail by accident and spread the fungus to other parts of your body or to other people.

Frequently asked questions about Jublia (efinaconazole)

                    Does Jublia (efinaconazole) really work?
It can. Studies show that after about 11 months of treatment, Jublia (efinaconazole) completely cleared toenail fungus in about 15-18% of people, compared to only 3-6% of people who used placebo. Talk with your primary care provider if you have questions about how well this medication might work for you.
How long does it take for Jublia (efinaconazole) to work?
In studies, people started to see improvement within 3 months of using Jublia (efinaconazole). But it can take up to a year to completely clear the infection. The reason why it takes so long is because the infected nail must grow out and be replaced by healthy nail. Because this process is slow, you need to use Jublia (efinaconazole) for 48 weeks.
Does Jublia (efinaconazole) cause liver damage?
No, Jublia (efinaconazole) doesn't cause liver damage. It's an azole antifungal, and this class of medications can sometimes cause liver problems when taken by mouth or given by injection. But since Jublia (efinaconazole) is applied directly to the nail, only a tiny amount of medication enters your body, so it doesn't harm the liver.
Is there a generic for Jublia (efinaconazole)?
No, Jublia (efinaconazole) is only available by brand name only.
Is Jublia (efinaconazole) over the counter?
No, Jublia (efinaconazole) is available by prescription only by a healthcare professional.
Can I use Jublia (efinaconazole) while breastfeeding?
It isn’t known if Jublia (efinaconazole) passes into breast milk. Since you only apply the solution to your toenail, very little of it gets into your body. This means the risk to your baby is likely very low. Still, you should talk with your prescriber before using Jublia (efinaconazole) while breastfeeding to make sure it’s safe for both of you.
Can Jublia (efinaconazole) be used with nail polish?
It’s best to avoid nail polish or other cosmetic nail products while you’re using Jublia (efinaconazole) since it's not clear if it will impact how well the medication works. Ask your prescriber what nail care options are ok to use while you’re receiving treatment.
Can Jublia (efinaconazole) be used on fingernails?
Jublia (efinaconazole) is only FDA approved to treat toenail fungus. It's usually not prescribed for fingernail fungus because it hasn't been well studied in people with this condition. One report suggests that it might help, but more research is needed. If you have a fungal infection on your fingernails, talk with your primary care provider about the best treatment.
