What factors affect the cost of Entresto?
The cost of Entresto depends on several factors, including:
Location: Where you live affects your prescription medication costs. For example, GoodRx research shows that people living in Little Rock, Arkansas, often have higher prescription costs, while those in Denver tend to see lower prices.
Pharmacy: Prescription medication prices can vary among retailers, even those in the same neighborhood.
Generic versus brand-name availability: The generic version of Entresto typically costs much less than the brand-name option.
Insurance: Most insurance plans cover Entresto. But you may still have out-of-pocket costs, including a deductible and copays or coinsurance. The tier in which Entresto is placed on your plan’s formulary (list of covered medications) can also affect your costs.
Dose: Your prescribed dose may be lower if you have certain health issues, like kidney or liver problems. This can affect what you pay.
Discounts: Using a GoodRx discount could lower what you pay for Entresto.
Does insurance cover Entresto?
Entresto is widely covered by insurance plans, including Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace, commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid plans.
Prior authorization requirements vary by plan type. More than half of covered Medicaid enrollees and about 4 in 10 ACA plan members need to get prior authorization for coverage. To get prior authorization, your prescriber will have to submit information to your insurance provider about why you need the medication.
People with ACA plans are most likely to be subject to step therapy rules, which affect about 1 in 5 enrollees. (See the table below.) Step therapy is when you’re required to try other, usually lower-cost options first.
Check your plan’s formulary and summary of benefits and coverage. These documents can help you determine if Entresto is covered and how much it may cost you. If you’re unsure, call the phone number listed on the back of your prescription insurance card.

What to do if Entresto isn’t covered by your insurance
Here are a few steps you can take if your insurance doesn’t cover Entresto:
Use GoodRx or enroll in GoodRx Companion to help lower your costs.
Check if you’re eligible for financial help through an independent patient assistance program. (See more on this and GoodRx savings below.)
Talk to your prescriber about the generic version of Entresto. If the generic isn’t covered, ask your prescriber about alternatives.
Submit a formulary exception request for Entresto to your insurance plan. Your prescriber may need to provide certain documentation, including a letter of medical necessity explaining why you need this specific medication.
If the formulary exception is denied, appeal the decision.
During the next open enrollment period, shop around for an insurance plan that offers better coverage for your medications.

2. Enroll in GoodRx Companion
You may be able to save even more on generic Entresto with a GoodRx Companion subscription. Over 250 medications are available for free, with hundreds more for under $10 per month.
The GoodRx Companion program also includes benefits to help you cut your self-pay costs, such as lower prices for online care visits, discounts on dental care, and other health service savings.
3. Check if you’re eligible for independent patient assistance programs
If you’re uninsured or underinsured, consider looking into independent patient assistance programs. There are nonprofit-sponsored programs that provide financial assistance to people who need help covering Entresto copays and medical expenses related to conditions it treats.
Consider seeing if you qualify for an independent patient assistance program through:
Each program has its own eligibility criteria. If a program isn’t accepting new applicants, you may be able to join a wait list and be notified when enrollment is open again.
4. See if you qualify for Medicare Extra Help
The Medicare Extra Help program helps reduce Medicare Part D costs for people with limited incomes. If you qualify, you will have no monthly premiums, no annual deductible, and low copays. This includes low copays for Entresto.
You can apply online for Medicare Extra Help. You can also call 1-800-772-1213 (or 1-800-325-0778 for TTY users) to apply over the phone.
5. Ask for a 90-day supply
Talk to your prescriber about getting a 90-day prescription for Entresto. Pharmacies may offer discounts on larger quantities of the medication. And some insurance plans offer lower copays when you fill a 3-month supply instead of monthly refills. It’s worth comparing prices to see if this option could save you money.
You can also check whether your insurer’s mail-order pharmacy offers discounts for 90-day fills.
6. Tap into your HSA, FSA, or HRA
If you have a health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), or health reimbursement arrangement (HRA), you can use those funds to pay for Entresto and other qualifying medical expenses.
Keep in mind that FSA money must be used by the end of your plan year or you’ll lose it, unless your employer provides a grace period or allows you to carry over a portion. HSA funds, however, roll over each year and remain available whenever you need them. HRA funds may or may not expire, depending on the account.
The bottom line
Without insurance or discounts, 60 tablets of brand-name Entresto (sacubitril / valsartan) 97 mg/103 mg cost an average of $888.71. The average retail price for the same quantity and dose of the generic version is $498.18. Methodology
We obtained national prescription coverage data for each medication from Managed Markets Insight & Technology (MMIT). The data reflects health insurance coverage as of September 2025.
We calculated the percentage of enrollees in plans that cover each medication by dividing the number of enrollees covered for the medication within a specific insurance channel (e.g., ACA, Medicare, Medicaid) by the total number of enrollees in all plans within that channel.
We determined the percentage of enrollees in plans with a prior authorization requirement by calculating the proportion of enrollees in plans that required prior authorization for the medication within each channel.
Finally, we measured the percentage of enrollees in plans with a step therapy requirement by calculating the proportion of enrollees in plans that imposed step therapy requirements for the medication in each channel.
These estimates, derived from national MMIT coverage data, provide insight into health insurance coverage for each medication. They take into account restrictions such as prior authorization, step therapy, and quantity limits. The percentages are expressed relative to the total number of enrollees covered by various insurance channels, including ACA plans, commercial (excluding ACA) plans, Medicare, and Medicaid (both state-run and managed care plans).
