Good to Give: Rallying Behind the AAPI Community Amid Anti-Asian Hate Crimes

Amanda Nguyen, PhD
Published on May 24, 2021

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, anti-Asian hate crimes have escalated at an alarming rate. In response, on March 19, 2020, the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON), Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA), and the Asian American Studies Department of San Francisco State University established the Stop AAPI Hate reporting center ”to track and respond to incidents of hate, violence, harassment, discrimination, shunning, and child bullying against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI).”

GoodRx recognizes that racial violence is a public health problem and that anti-Asian hate incidents have negative consequences for both physical and mental health. That’s why Stop AAPI Hate is one of the four organizations our employees chose to support through the company’s Good to Give program last quarter. With a donation of $6,250, we are supporting their mission to prevent anti-Asian and anti-Pacific Islander hate incidents.

Stop AAPI Hate’s data collection efforts are critical, especially since Asian Americans are one of the groups most likely to underreport hate crimes to law enforcement. Stop AAPI Hate analyzes their data to develop and support local, state, and national policies to combat the immediate and long-term causes of racism and hate against AAPI. According to Stop AAPI Hate: “By identifying patterns and sources of anti-Asian racism, we are better able to support government agencies and community-based organizations that request our assistance.”

I nominated Stop AAPI Hate for the Good to Give donation because I believe we must recognize the scope of the problem in order to address it. For too long, the myth of the “model minority” has been used to erase AAPI’s experiences with systemic racism and prejudice. Stop AAPI Hate’s efforts have shed light on these issues and helped jumpstart the national conversation on how to stop hate incidents against AAPI.

Donations to Stop AAPI Hate will be used to:

  • Provide data and consultation to other organizations and local decision-makers

  • Educate and provide resources to corporations, schools, and community groups

  • Develop and support local, state, and national response strategies

  • Connect hate victims to multi-lingual, local support organizations

Good to Give is our employee-driven charity program, where we support nonprofit organizations and contribute to their efforts through donations. To select groups to support throughout the year, we’re asking our employees to nominate nonprofits and causes important to them before taking a company-wide vote on recipients each quarter. Read more about the program and other recipients here.
