GoodRx Helps is committed to finding ways to address racial and social disparities in healthcare. We believe that one of the many ways we can make a difference is through financial assistance to underrepresented groups in the medical field. As such, we established the Future Black Physicians and Physician Associates Scholarship last year to support the careers of Black students entering the world of medicine.
By investing in underrepresented groups, we hope to further diversity and inclusion in the healthcare workforce. Having a workforce representative of the population can even affect outcomes: Data suggest that improved diversity in the workforce can help reduce racial inequities in healthcare.
In a 2018 survey, only 5% of active physicians in the U.S. identified as Black or African American. But hope is on the horizon: 11.3% of first-year medical students in 2021 identified as Black or African American, which is up from 9.5% in 2020.
We would like to see this trend continue, so we are proud to support more Black students as they set out on this remarkable journey.
The Future Black Physicians and Physician Associates Scholarship will provide $5,000 each to 10 winners — 5 medical students and 5 physician associate students.
Applications will be accepted June 1 through July 13, and winners will be announced on August 10.
Here are the application requirements:
Be a current or recently graduated Black medical (MD, DO) or physician associate student (PA) student
Have completed your last semester no earlier than spring 2022 (if a recent graduate)
Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)
Self-identify as a Black or African American student in the healthcare field
As part of the application process, we’d like to hear applicants’ thoughts on the increased prevalence of depression and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. This trend has disproportionately affected communities already vulnerable to mental health issues, such as those who identify as LGBTQ+ or racial minorities. Scholarship applicants should reflect on how they, as future providers, could help remedy or prepare for these mental health challenges.
At GoodRx Helps, we believe representation matters. That’s why we’re looking forward to supporting future Black physicians and physician associates as they change the face of healthcare.
