Xifaxan (rifaximin) is used to treat traveler's
diarrhea and
irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea. It is also used to prevent
hepatic encephalopathy, a brain disorder that can occur due to severe
liver disease. Xifaxan is a
rifamycin which works by killing bacteria that causes infection. The most common form of Xifaxan is a 550mg tablet. It is also available as a 200mg tablet. There are currently no generic alternatives for Xifaxan. It is covered by some Medicare and insurance plans, but some pharmacy coupons or cash prices may be lower.
